Neither will cause limp mode. Both are DIY replaceable. \r\n\r\nThere are several other components which can cause intermittent limp mode, including the ETA as @McQueenLifeGoals noted below. RFC Electronics in AL will rebuild the ETA if needed. Fault codes should help pinpoint the root cause. Regardless, this is definitely fixable and not a dealbreaker. Tons of threads on 500E board discussing limp mode and DIY troubleshooting / repairs.\r\n\r\nFor those unfamiliar with limp mode, 99% of the time it is cleared/reset by shutting off the engine and re-starting. If \"stuck\" in limp mode, the car is still drivable, but has abnormal travel at the gas pedal, and will not go to full throttle. Eventually, the mice ate through the upper wiring harness leaving the car disabled. IIRC, MBZ made the wire insulation out of Soy to be more eco-friendly in these late models - but mice LOVE soy. It cost him $8500 at the Stealer to replace the upper harness because they needed to remove the engine - and that was after a 2 month wait for the harness to be shipped (and made?) from Germany. I'm not sure replacing the upper/lower harnesses require an engine-out procedure in the W124 E500 but you should do your research.
