In 1985 I decided to check out a Harley dealership when I noticed the Honda Rebel seemed to be pulling styling cues from The Motor Company. At the time if one had no tats or a gun in their boot, one may have been a bit ill at ease in such a place which tended not to be located in the better parts of town. I was the only \u201cclient\u201d at the time and the Wrench, complete with pot belly and a ZZ Top beard, was manning the store. This guy was as nice as he could be. We talked for at least two hours. At one point he took me into \u201cthe back\u201d to show me the owner\u2019s collection of Indians of which there were many. But what really caught my eye was a little 2 foot square hydraulic floor lift over which sat this new neon pumpkin that was undergoing its original service. I was smitten. The Wrench referred me to the owner who was to be back the following day for particulars. When I arrived the next day the owner told me to go out front and he would bring the bike around for me to ride. I declined but he insisted. I maneuvered to a sparsely trafficked 4 lane highway and caught myself grinning from ear to ear ecstatic as I motored along at 45. Feeling this good going this slow was a rather novel experience for me at the time. The hook was \r\nwell and truly set. On returning the owner informed me he had promised this bike to a fellow who was to look it over the coming weekend and if he passed it was mine. \r\nWell the guy took it. I told the owner \u201cyou HAVE TO get me one of those\u201d. He told me they were limited editions and each dealership was supposedly allotted only one but he would do his best. A fews days later he called to inform me he had managed to secure the unit now offered for sale. I grew up with Honda, Kawasaki and BMW. They all had their strengths but this particular bike always made me (insert any synonym for \u201chappy\u201d here) for some reason. It always seemed tighter, stronger, and more flickable than any Harley big twin I\u2019ve ever been familiar with. Indeed the handling of the FXRs due to the stiff frame seems to have contributed to the model's popularity with police, custom builders and one percenters. The paint finish is pretty remarkable in the sun and I\u2019ve never tired of the overall look of this bike. If I were still riding this would not be leaving my custodianship. It makes me sad to see it not being ridden as a lot of people consider the FXR models one of if not the best Harley ever made\u2026 and I\u2019m with them. I never saw this factory custom advertised nor have I ever seen a brochure that mentioned it. I\u2019ve seen two in the wild years ago and they were shredded then. Lou Reed owned one. I\u2019ve seen the term Super Glide II and Candy Glide used in referring to FXRCs. My understanding is Harley came within minutes of being padlocked later in 1985. The FXRs seem to have ginned up interest at a time when Japanese bikes were quite ascendant and The Motor Company\u2019s future a bit uncertain. It shows a FXRC with the brown seat and pillion as it came from the factory. Seemed like an extra color that wasn't picked up anywhere else on the bike so I asked the dealer if he would consider swapping it for the black one he had on a new stock red FXRS at the time. He did and sold the red one within a week to a guy that liked the brown seat on the red bike (where it looked better than it did on this one in my opinion). It's not a Mustang. It is just like the factory brown one only black. To me it just looked more of a piece with the black seat. The original aluminum petcock was very stiff. The chrome Golan unit has ball bearings and is a joy to operate as it has a nice snick snick feel to it.\r\n-- chrome brake and clutch levers\r\n\r\nIf one wanted to take it all the way back to stock, all of these can either be removed to uncover or replaced with original retained parts with the exception of: \r\n-- the brown seat\r\n-- the right points cover\r\n-- the original handlebar grips\r\nwhich I am not in possession of\r\n\r\n-- note one of the original mirrors has a crack running through the glass and the \r\nbelt guard has a bolt hole that is missing about half of its ring. Washer was serving to hold it in place at that point. There are little green arrows pointing these out in the gallery if you can enlarge the photos enough to see them. The paint defect seems coated in clear coat as it has not changed in appearance over time and I would have expected it to \"grow\" if it were shop rash. It is easy to miss. Coming from chains and shafts, I was very much concerned over the belt bulge at the time. Belts were new to me and apparently the dealer as well. Best we could figure a pebble got between the sprocket and belt. He suggested we watch it which we did. After a bit it became a non issue as it never changed in any way and didn't seem to compromise the functional integrity of the belt. It's the original belt that came on the bike and 10,000 or more of the miles have been put on the bike with the belt in the condition you see it. They had a special paint scheme but no plate anywhere designating them. I was told it was 300 of each but haven't been able to find out much about them online. I did find a video of a dealer I think it was The New England Motorcycle Museum giving a 10-15 minute sales pitch on one. He never once mentioned its relative rarity. Recognized it though as I bought one of the FLHTC's that year after purchasing this one. I realize it was a heavier bike and noisier with the fairing but the FXRC ran so much stronger even though it was the same motor. Made me wonder if they put the top 10% dyno tested motors in the FXRs or something. I don't even know if Harley tested the motors prior to putting them in the bikes or not.
