As I proceeded with the restoration I stripped the car for the repaint and then started to purchase parts in advance of my next planned steps. The original wiring harnesses were in terrible shape and dangerous so I purchased the new wiring harnesses and installed them after the repaint from the rear of the car leading up to the instrument panel. I purchased many used chrome pieces to replace the damaged or missing one, had them rechromed, and started installing them. I had the engine, cylinder head, starter motor, water pump, radiator, and generator rebuilt and assembled them on engine test stand to run the engine outside the car before installation. The 3.4L XK engine cranks with the starter, has great compression and oil pressure when cranked. I purchased new hoses, plugs, wires, and many of the other components needed to run the engine outside the car, but never got that far. From the photos in the gallery you will see the condition of many of the original parts as well as the parts awaiting installation. The rechromed parts like the front bumper and hood chrome strips are stunning. I have a few sets of the rear seat picnic tables, and the best ones are in excellent shape. There are many pieces that will still need to be replaced, and undoubtedly some that are missing. However a car I bought out of Illinois that had previously been titled (multiple times) in California and Michigan came with an interesting error that had not interfered with all of the previous titles. Someone, previous to it going from NY to Michigan used the engine # instead of the chassis # for the VIN. As that engine was removed and the replacement engine was from a different marque the only place the VIN on the Title and registration could be found on the car was on the Mfg Data Plate! Assuming that when I sold the car the wrong number for the VIN would bite me in the A***, the car was take to the CHP for verification and they were shown the 2 places I'd found the Chassis # stamped into body panels and the same number on the Data Plate. They signed off on the verification form showing the 7 digit Chassis # as the ViN and the DMV issued the title with the correct number. If this could be done in California it seems likely that the needed correction would be done in Florida. The car was driven into a CA DMV with a verification agent. Showed the agent the Illinois title, pointed out the error, showed him the Chassis # stamped in the body and on the data plate, and explained it all. He filled out the paperwork and had to put a check mark in the box for \"numbers on Title do not match #'s on cars (I don't recall the actual wording but the point is that numbers didn't match) and the explanation was written in a small area near the bottom. Happily walked into the office and the clerk who was about to finalize the transaction was overheard by her manager saying something about the corrected VIN. The manager asked to look at the papers, saw the Number don't match box checked and in true Cal DMV style announced that they could not issue a title due to the mismatch. I pointed out that her verifier had signed off but she insisted that it wasn't acceptable. Then I asked whose verification she would accept and the answer was the CHP. Some years ago local police were willing to do verifications and I had a couple where an officer came to my house to verify cars, but they stopped doing it around here. Outside of the cities it may still be possible to get peace officers to do verifications, but the CHP is top of the heap. With a flash of inspiration I asked if she had the phone # for the closest CHP office and she shared it with me. Called and a person answered, no stupid phone menu, and they said to come over and perhaps they could fit me in between appointments. The officer looked at the car and the paperwork I'd brought from the DMV and said the verification from the DMV guy was sufficient so he didn't need to fill out another form!!! I repeated that the manager had rejected her own verifier's approval and was play CYA in case anything went wrong in the future so she could blame CHP instead of her office. Thankfully he laughed and completed the form and as previously mentioned, a correct title was issued.\r\nI recently bought a bike that was titled as a 1966 but researching the ViN prior to purchase showed it was first sold in Europe in 1960, first year the model was offered. I left it titled as a '66 as it was the most expedient way to get the title transferred. When the time comes to get it corrected I'll get a letter from the manufacturer and print out the registry showing ViNs and years of production and take them straight to the CHP before going to the DMV.\r\n\r\nusing a Title transfer agent is probably a very safe way to go as they know the folks they need to work with at the DMV and have years of experience. The pervious owner had installed a piece of mirror glass on the inside of the wing window, when you opened it you could use it as a side mirror, brilliant!
