I can attest that this MGB/GT V8 is a hoot to drive. The attention to small detail is exemplified in the under hood picture 168 in the gallery. It illustrates that the polished bolts used to fix the front fenders to the inner panels are stamped with the letters \u2018GT\u2019. Further, the bolts are all oriented so as to have the letters aligned to read from the front of the car! The present owner took delivery of the car here in Southern California in October of last year following an online purchase. On his initial drive in the car @tvrdude realized that the cooling system was not up to dealing with our local climate. Here in inland San Diego County temperatures often reach triple digits between May and November. So the car was immediately sent off to the repair shop for a thorough overall vehicle review and cooling system evaluation to make it ready for weekend drives on our mountain back roads. A list of items requiring attention was generated and work to resolve issues commenced. The work performed is documented in pictures 245-248 in the gallery. Shortly after work on the car was started the owner\u2019s medical condition was identified as serious, work already underway was completed and further work on the car was halted.\r\n\r\nPresently two items from the original list remain to be addressed; \r\n1) The a/c system has lost charge since it was serviced last winter. The system functions very well when it has a full charge as it blew very cold back in January. Bear in mind that January in San Diego is still hot by the standards of most of North America. It is not clear if the leak is the result of a pinched or failed o-ring or a leaking hose. There are 5 a/c hoses on the car and the 3 of them were replaced in the recent service. For desert operation this a/c issue should be addressed by the new owner.\r\n2) At speeds above 80 mph there is what is best described as a low frequency hum that is audible in the cockpit. It has been traced to the transmission. The sound is not gear specific, but rather, it is vehicle speed specific. The hum is not present when \u2018driven\u2019 while the car is lifted in the air. It is only present under load with the wheels on the ground at high speed. The driveshaft has been rebuilt with new universal joints and then re-balanced in an effort to eliminate the noise. There is no excessive play in the differential nor is there any untoward noise from the rear wheel bearings. This issue should be addressed by the next owner in a few thousand miles or prior to any extended \u2018hard use\u2019 operation. The goal of the present owner was not to do further modifications to the car, but rather to enjoy it while there is still time. To that end my advice to him was to freshen up the suspension via maintenance and install a set of uprated lever action shocks from Moss Motors. It is my belief that for his weekend touring use this approach offered the best bang for @tvrdude's buck. The composite rear leaf springs were on the car as-purchased. We have no documentation on their source but there is information on the web showing use and availability of composite leaf springs for MGBs back around the time that the car was built in the 2005-2008 timeframe. These composite leaf springs are approximately 25% of the weight of the OEM steel springs.\n\n@morgannut, thank you for your question regarding the car\u2019s weight. As @Salty_Dog has mentioned, we have not weighed the car. However the MGB Wikipedia entry states that the Rover version of this engine as used in the BMC factory V8 installation weighed approximately 40Lbs less than MG\u2019s cast iron 4-pot unit. Buick\u2019s in-period data lists their version of the engine at 318Lbs while Oldsmobile listed their version at 350Lbs. The addition of a/c likely likely means that this car is about 100Lbs heavier overall due to the new engine. The Ford 8\u201d rear axle likely adds a few more pounds to the rear of the car.\n\n@malloryross, thank you for your interest in the genesis of this Olds 266ci mill. Oldsmobile never produced a 266 version of this all aluminum small block engine. This displacement was achieved by the use of a stroker crankshaft sourced from an iron-block Buick 300ci engine. A bit of background here may be helpful for those interested in this unique aluminum engine. GM introduced an all new small block engine architecture for their new premium small cars, the Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile F85 and Pontiac Tempest starting in 1961. They are often called the BOP (Y-body) cars produced for 3 model years through 1963. As a result the aluminum 215 small block is commonly referred to as the BOP V8. The 215ci (3.5L) displacement V8 had a 3.5\u201d x 2.8\u201d bore and stroke with a 4.24\u201d bore spacing. There were 2 separate versions of the engine, one, built and used by Oldsmobile in the F-85, and the 2nd built by Buick, and used in both the Skylark and Tempest. The primary difference between the engines was the cylinder heads. The Olds design used six bolts per cylinder while the Buick \u2018nailhead\u2019 design used a five bolts per cylinder. The Olds 6-bolt design was intended to provide greater sealing capability for their tradition of \u2018high-compression Rocket\u2019 V8s. Following GM\u2019s decision to go bigger and turn the senior compacts into intermediates for 1964 they shelved the expensive to produce all aluminum engines and go forward with less expensive thin-wall cast-iron small blocks. Buick\u2019s cast iron 300ci small block, introduced in \u201964, uses the same bore spacing as the aluminum 215. As a result the 300 crankshaft is almost a drop-in replacement. As a footnote it is interesting that Jack Brabbham worked with Repco down in Austrailia to develop OHC heads and a short-stroke crankshaft for the Olds 6-bolt version of the aluminum 215 to form the basis engine for Brabbham\u2019s 3-litre 1966 and 1967 F1 World Championship wins.\n\n@Arkus1, thank you for your questions regarding why this engine was chosen for the swap and it's power output. To the best of our knowledge the engine has not been dyno\u2019d. At least there are no dyno records included with the documentation received by @tvrdude at the time of his purchase of the car. In-period figures published by Oldsmobile put the original 215 at 190BHp with a 4-bbl carburetor and 10.25/1 compression ratio in 1962. Those figures and the as-built configuration of the engine in the car support the estimated 265 to 280BHp as being reasonable as shown in picture 241 in the gallery. \n\n@Arkus1, you are correct that the aluminum engine was chosen because of it\u2019s light weight. But there is more to the story than that. Further background will shed some light on the subject of why it was the optimum choice for this Anglo-American heart transplant. When GM ceased production of the 215 V8 at the end of the \u201963 model year they wisely mothballed the tooling instead of simply scrapping it. In 1964 Rover went shopping for an American V8 engine to use in their cars. They learned of the existence of the Buick tooling and negotiated a deal for Rover to purchase the tooling outright. That deal was completed in 1965. Rover set about general updates to the engine and proceeded to make it available as a regular production option in the Rover P5B starting in 1967. The engine remained in production by Rover through 2006. Rover sold the engine to multiple English manufacturers over the years including TVR, Land Rover, Morgan, Triumph and MG. Because of it\u2019s widespread use the former BOP 215 became England\u2019s ubiquitous choice for hot rodding, much like the small block Chevy engine in the U.S. Starting in 1973 MG introduced the MGB V8 using the Rover 3.5L engine. The V8 version of the MGB was never exported to the United States. Fast forward to the late \u201880s and British Motor Heritage had purchased the tooling to reproduce new MGB body shells for the restoration market. Following the success of Mazda with the MX-5 Miata, BMH, which was then owned by Rover, built a limited production updated version of the MGB, called the RV8. You are correct that the MGB has upper and lower trunions vs ball joints from the factory. This car retains them. It is possible to convert to ball joints\u2026.but it is not a task for the faint of heart or wallet! There are kits out there to accomplish this. The primary engineering value of ball joints compared to trunions is an overall reduction in sliding friction and a uniform pivot point for greater geometric accuracy of wheel movement. The geometry improvement makes them better for race cars. For street cars the biggest plus of ball joints is that they require less frequent lubrication and can last longer if neglected; trunions require routine lubrication. I have a copy of the 465 page book, 'The Complete Official MGB Workshop Manual, on my lap as I write (included with the sale of the car) and it recommends the trunions be greased every 3000 miles.\r\n\r\nThese reasons listed above coupled with the now-common use of McPherson strut / Chapman strut suspension designs along with lower cost to buy and install at the factory are why we have ball joints on pretty much all modern cars. Conversion to ball joints would require new spindles, possibly upper and lower A-arms, and maybe even shock absorbers and brakes. Basically an all new front suspension. The short answer is yes, here in SoCal if I owned the car, I would leave the rear of the hood elevated as-is. \u2018Winter weather' (mid-December \u2013 April) here in inland San Diego County, is typically like summer weather in the much of the rest of the country with temperatures often reaching into the 80s fahrenheit (mid 20s celsius). The other half of the year often sees triple digit temperatures (37C and higher). When the car arrived here in SoCal after purchase it was not able to cope with triple digit ambient temps without coolant temp rising to 210F (99C), during spirited driving. It never overheated but it did not provide sufficient margin to provide confidence. Review of the cooling system showed that the coolant fill port was not the high point in the system. As a result it was not possible to reliably get trapped air out of the system. An expansion tank mounted on the passenger side of the firewall was plumbed in. This location made the fill port on the expansion tank the high point of the cooling system. A pair of small diameter bleed lines with 1/8\u201d diameter restrictors, running from the top of the radiator and the intake manifold to the expansion tank, were added to allow the trapped air to self-bleed. A large diameter feed line now runs from the bottom of the expansion tank to the low-pressure side of the water pump to supply air-free coolant to the system (see picture 147). This keeps the operating range at a confidence inspiring 180-200F. Fast forward to May with temps now reaching triple digits and we saw recovery time in stop and go operation being uncomfortably slow. Back in the driveway with the hood up everything was fine. I see that there are panels installed that could be opened more which would help with getting heat out of the car. These aluminum engines actually can run fairly hot by design. There's a Wilwood caliper, but picture 251 lists the front rotors as being from a 1996 Accord V6. I have a 1996 accord (reworked with an H22) but those rotors don't look anything like mine. Also, I truly appreciate the pictures of the wiring. That's always a big question mark with reworked vehicles like this.
