In addition they told me they would examine, test drive and evaluate my 911 to the same requirements needed to acheve the Porsche Approved Certified Pre-owned Program. At the end of their evaluation the technician called me and spent about an hour explaining all that was done.\r\nIn an earlier post you asked me if I had a DME examination and in this PPI you will see it passed and did not show any abuse.\r\nYou also asked if I had any documentation to verify the odometer or tampering. As you will see in this PPI it was examined and they found no signs of possible tampering.\r\nThis examination was done on 12/05/2013 showing 18,732 miles. Today it shows 18,732. Most sellers will set their readers to mils rather than microns (almost all readers have both settings, just a click of a menu button to change it). Seller, you had your reader set to microns and there are 25.4 microns to a mil. So for those that are used to seeing readings in mils, just divide all sellers numbers by 25.4 and you will have your mils readings.\r\n\r\nSeller, I wouldn't infer that a totally different make and model year (your BMW) will naturally have the same readings, and thereby have been resprayed. Paint depths can vary dramatically across manufacturers and definitely across vastly different model years. There have been hundreds if not thousands of 911s on here with paint readings that give all of us a good range for what represents original paint and I believe that is what Freemason is getting at. Frankly, the numbers on your car aren't wildly out of spec for some colors, although the ones above 185ish do make one question them. Moreover, in my experience, different colors also tend to have varying depths from factory. From what I have seen, black cars tend to have readings on the thinner side as black covers more easily. Manufacturers are always in to keeping costs down, so if they can save paint they will. Most of the black 993s I have seen, tend to read very high 3's to mid 4's at the low end and low to high 5's at the high end, for the most part. Clearly there can be a handful of spots where the readings may vary at somewhat higher levels. Other colors like Guards Red tend to be closer to the 4-7 range from factory (and yes, even on the same car). In my experience, hoods tend to have the lowest readings. Doesn't mean that yours, being black, with higher numbers in a variety of places was definitely repainted, but numbers above 150-160 microns on black ones makes one want to look further into the possibility of resprays, at the very least. Sloan has had a reputation for probably 4 decades(?) for selling the cleanest low mileage concours condition Porsches in the world and not for cheap. That fact alone and the inference that it's been stored properly puts this car in an entirely different category from most of the cars sold here.\r\n\r\nSecondly, (and I get tired of repeating this), the completely uninformed opinions that all of the seals inside of an engine and transmission somehow magically dry up and disintegrate from non-use flys in the face of any legitimate mechanic's experience. Seals fail FROM USE, rarely from being static in an oil filled chamber. The suggestion that this engine needs to be completely torn down to the crank and rebuilt to the tune of $40k without any actual knowledge of the car is borderline slanderous, IMO. Uttered by someone who I'm guessing has never touched a wrench in their life. \r\n\r\nI have no affiliation with Sloan, the seller or this car and I am not a bidder, unfortunately. Smoke on startup for a second is very common even if the car sits for 5 weeks or longer. But that is usually a very small puff of smoke that often isn't even seen if you're in the driver's seat. Prolonged smoking however, is a different story.\r\n\r\nMy personal experience, as an original owner, is that my car was fine for 15 years when it was driven often enough, but as soon as I stored it for several years, the turbos suffered and had to be rebuilt, one of them twice. Once I had the check valve system installed, the problem went away forever, even with extended sitting for 6-12 months I now have zero smoke at first startup. My story is repeated endlessly in the forums and why the kit was offered to begin with, They are a must have.\r\n\r\nThe other issue is that given the dramatic changes in oils since these cars were built, 0-W40 (which many still put in their engines) adds to the problem. 20-W50 or possibly 10-W60 is what is needed these days. Without both these measures, you usually end up with turbos needing to be rebuilt or replaced.\r\n\r\nNot sure if you saw the auction last week, but that car was driven consistently until 2015, then stored for years and the first time it was brought out, turbos needed replacing, then stored again for several years and same thing happened. The issue I was referring to is Mezgers smoking on cold starts\u2026I installed that oil return line check valve on my RS 4.0 and it seems like it has helped 70-80% so not a complete cure but worth the effort.
