A close friend had raced one in SCCA club racing and still had a race engine that he offered. We put the race engine in the car and took it to a few autocross competitions. The engine wa very radical with varied cam lift and duration on the two center cylinders to provide a more even cylinder fill. The engine was very peaky but from 5200rpm to 8700rpm it was like the afterburner lit. You had to anticipate hitting redline to shift without over rev of the engine. After playing with the car in this state of tune we finally rebuilt the original engine to a milder spec. that was easy to drive on the street and swapped the race engine back out. I gave the car to my father who drove it for about 10 years before rust issues became insurmountable. Great little cars. The front end is very light but with a few small suspension tweaks they handle extremely well. I also owned an 850 Sedan, which I had upgraded to something close to an 850 Special. The car was labeled by Fiat as an 850 Spyder in all of the literature \u2014 from sales brochures to service and parts manuals. As I recall, the title referred to the line as 850 ****. What's seven cubic centimeters anyway? That's about 1/4 ounce, which is nothing. I had two major issues with 850s that came into our shop. First of all, the kingpins were very poorly lubricated and capped with metal disks similar to freeze-out plugs. They pins rode in bronze or brass press-in bearings. I always that I'd try a different type of bearing, or at least increase lubrication channels and add threaded plugs. The second issue that I frequently saw was extreme wear of the timing gears causing the chain to slip and jump \u2014 not good, to say the least. But these were fun and inexpensive cars \u2014 great for graduate students. You would not believe how many of these engines I have torn down where the filter is packed solid! There is no spin on oil filter, or a cartridge oil filter.\r\n873 & 817 engines have a stamped steel oil pan that holds three US quarts. The 903 engines with the alloy pan as this car has takes 5 quarts.\r\nDoes the receipt show what kind of oil was used?\r\n\r\n@JG333SP, the jack has been painted. I have a stack of 850 jacks I need to check in that are all originally painted gray.
