As far as the shifting goes, they actually shift just fine just as long as everything in the linkage is properly lubed, adjusted, and not worn. I retarded the timing 5 degrees, richened the Spica pump an eighth turn, and the CO went up barely and the HC and NOx came down considerably, with a 32-year-old cat. So all good. Alfettas are notoriously rust prone particularly at shock towers, windscreen and rear hatch. Rust at rockers is surprising. Can't tell what is going on below rear bumper. Looks like a new skirt there given the spot welds. We have two 76 alfettas. They are very different from earlier alfas and some of the differences explain why they have not been much loved. Nice handling with the transaxle weight distribution. Their achilles heals are rust, and the drive shaft design. The rubber guibos in the drive shaft are a problem, one in particular which is south of the flywheel. In the early cars these failed catastropically. By 79 they did a redesign. Better. Unfortunately now that particular donut is unobtainable. Venders sell something but no go. New ones lack the bearing embedded in the donut. NOT viable. Best bet is NOS but now super rare plus the rubber is already 30 yrs old.
