Without knowing each other, we all bought our 2600 Spiders at about the same time, and so, got to know each other and helped each other to keep or bring the cars alive. For a period of time, the seller and I even owned a parts car together. \r\n\r\nAlthough I have never driven this car myself, I can attest to the fact that, in my opinion, this is an excellent driver in \"ready to go\" condition. Over the years, the seller and I had many discussions about how he nurtured the car, giving it not just what it needed when it needed it, but took care of things long before they needed attention (i.e., preventative maintenance and overhauling) -- just to be sure everything worked, and will work, well and reliably, for the long term. AFAIK, the seller never took any shortcuts or skimped on any expenses -- in fact, he respected the car and Alfa's engineering so much that I believe he would never consider such a thing -- and thus, he certainly improved the car every year I've seen it. \r\n\r\nSo, with respect to @heinrich's questions, let me share some insights on how I see the situation from arm's length (other than being friends with a passion for these cars, I have no affiliation with the seller, or the sale of this car):\r\n\r\nQ1 (technical condition): AFAIK from the conversations with the seller, the car seems to be fully sorted, and everything technical seems to be in good to great condition. \r\n\r\nQ2 (tops): I've never seen the hardtop or the soft top closed. Getting a new canvas top fitted, should this ever be desired (or deemed necessary), is not a big issue. Restoring and fitting the hardtop is not a big deal either (I believe the missing pieces the seller referred to are the trim strips above the side windows). Hardtops in this condition seem to sell for about USD 1,200 to 1,800, because they are RARE! But then again, nowadays nobody drives these cars in the winter time (or bad weather) anymore, so, neither hardtop nor soft top are really needed, and an OK soft top is good enough should one be surprised by a rain shower.\r\n\r\nQ3 (paint): Last time I saw the car (a few weeks ago, as I'll describe below), I didn't notice anything that needed work. The blemishes the seller refers to are negligible, in my opinion, and the fact that they are mentioned are a testimony to his honesty and his sense of perfection.\r\n\r\nQ4 (body work required): AFAIK, there is no body work required. The outside paint was stripped to bare metal and the floor pans replaced a few years ago. I believe the rocker panels were done either by a previous owner (not long before the seller got the car) and/or done at the same time the floor pans. So, I believe there is absolutely no bodywork needed.\r\n\r\nNow, to the mentioning of \"condition 1\". I'm not entirely sure what that means -- because it means different things to different people. If we look at AROC National Concours standards (which are exceptionally hard, as @Arno may confirm), the car would get points deducted for color and interior not being factory original, for the 16\" wheels (if it were presented with those instead of the 400 mm wheels that are also included with the car), and the Weber conversion. Other than that, I don't see much to complain about (and probably would not even deduct points for the blemishes in the paint, especially for a car that is driven rather than trailered to an event). \r\n\r\nThat being said,I believe the car would rate very well at a general Concours -- not just because of its condition, but also because of its presence: This car, in this color, in this condition has a blend of elegance and bullishness that is not captured in the pictures -- it would have needed a slightly longer lens for that. \r\n\r\nCase in point: A few weeks ago, at a local car event at a restoration shop, the seller dropped by with the car, towards the end of the event, and I witnessed how the crowd of car geeks reacted: The visual impression of the car, being slowly driven through the crowd of people and parked cars for finding a parking spot, interrupted almost every conversation. First, heads turned and jaws dropped, then murmurs started \"wow, what kind of car is this?\" When the car was parked, a crowd started to form and moved closer to the car for taking pictures and asking questions. \r\n\r\nSo, this car, in this color, in this condition, truly is a head-turner -- even at specialized events. Yes, this type of data plate showing both chassis and engine number seems to be unique to cars originally delivered to France. I was able to study the records in Alfa's archive in person a few years ago, and found no information about engine numbers there. So, this car is one of very few examples where proof of chassis and engine number, as supplied by the factory, exits. The fact that last digits engine number and chassis number are not the same (which would be truly matching numbers) is partially due to the fact that Alfa Romeo used the same type of engine (and engine number range) for 2600 Sprint and Spider, which resulted in a more or less random allocation of engines and numbers. The gearboxes had no numbers, so whether or not the gearbox was supplied from the factory or replaced at a later pint in time cannot be proved or disproved, and therefore is, in my opinion, irrelevant.\r\nAlso worth noting is that this data plate proves that Renault was the official importer and distributor for Alfa Romeo in France at the time (Alfa and Renault had entered into a bilateral support agreement in 1959, where Renault service stations would support Alfas in France, and Alfa service stations would support Renaults in Italy -- this eventually led to Alfa Romeo producing cars with Renault Dauphine and R4 bodies as Alfa Romeos in Italy, and the body of the Alfa Romeo 103 series that never went into production being adapted for the Renault R8 and R10). So, from a historical perspective, these two companies have collaborated and competed in the market for a long time.\r\n\r\n2. The Carrozzeria Touring plate in Picture #130 shows the sequential production number (the sequence in which all cars at Touring that company were produced) -- spanning across marques, cars and models. \r\n\r\n3. The 3-digit number in picture 131 is the Carrozzeria Touring \"scocca\" number (a term John de Boer introduced), which is a job number for a specific series of cars that uniquely identifies a car, and is stamped or written on parts that were fitted to a body.
