It was very base spec: small 232 inch engine and a three speed manual on the column, which resulted in many of the employees not really wanting to drive it. Dad didn't care, and will still tell you to this day that the cars may have looked ugly, but drove very well, especially for a mid 70's domestic offering. One evening, as he was driving the pre-production Pacer home to South Jersey across the Ben Franklin Bridge, he was pulled over by a Delaware River Port Authority cop. The cop got out of his cruiser, and without speaking a word to my father, walked around the Pacer a time or two with his huge police issue flashlight on his shoulder illuminating every inch of the car. I started at 75, then 65, 55, and so on as my foot stayed on the floor while the speedo continued to drop. About halfway up the grade a big 18-wheeler pulled to my left and started to pass me. That's when I realized my little (but wide) Pacer needed a slight engine upgrade. Next thing I did was drop in an LS1 from a GTO that had wrapped itself around a tree. My first car. A white on white 1976 Pacer. It had the insanely powerful 258 I6... with the incredible Mopar 904 automatic... \r\n\r\nThat big assed York compressor was better suited for a Ford 460, on the 258, it killed it. Driving at 50 MPH and the AC kicks in, the car shuddered and slowed 3 mph. \r\n\r\nFor an economy car, as it was billed, it got junk gas mileage... I actually drove it to FL (and back, only suffered a bad exhaust manifold gasket failure, and the hood release broke) and averaged about 15-17 MPG.\r\n\r\nAs with every AMC, EVER, they rust, and so did mine. The rear quarters were rotting out, as was the drivers side back window frame. \r\n\r\nI guess for me, the entire experience was peppered with a few sad realities... 1) It was a Christmas present in 1981, and yes, I was excited to get a car, but it was tempered when it was a Pacer, a car, quite honestly, I never liked from the start. 2) I was a kinda fat, nerdy teen, not to be confused with being a fat, nerdy adult, but back then, it did matter, and the Pacer did not help my sex appeal... then again, I suspect it would have required a Ferrari to fix that. There are other issues, but most of them are a little too personal, and I suspect a touch petty to bitch about anymore.\r\n\r\nBut for the car itself, it was just not very reliable. The PS rack failed within weeks of getting the car. The AC ended up dying... the ignition module died, the trans leaked like a sieve, as did the valve cover gaskets. The OEM radio died... I actually had a spring in the left rear drum brake break! What? On a 7 year old car with 60k miles? It was actually a low mileage car, about 55k when I got it. It had 85k when I traded it in 1984 for a 1981 Celica GT Coupe. A huge step up. My take......the AMC engineering department lacked knowledge about materials and more. Having said that...I would OWN any AMC as AMC was ahead of their time with styling. You can't see it from eye level. The rust is only behind the front wheels and can be easily repaired . The shop I took it to 15 years ago should have fixed it at that time. The is no other evidence of rust on the car. As I said earlier, the car has been a garage the entire time we have owned it and not driven in bad weather. My guess is to repair these small areas might cost between $300 and $500. I would paint the rocker panel black. It was yellow with white vinyl top and the \"maize\" interior. It had the 258 I6 and 3 speed automatic so was pretty slow (my friend would put it in neutral and let roll backwards down a hill then slam it into gear to get the tires to chirp) but handled decently. One day it wasn't running well so he brought it up to my dad to diagnose it. Turns out the camshaft had wiped an exhaust lobe which wasn't uncommon in those days of flat tappet cams and early emissions controls. The reason I borrowed the car for my driver's test was that my recently purchased AMC Gremlin wasn't ready yet. We purchased that car for $250 with 70K miles on the odometer but it also had engine trouble. My dad was a mechanic on the side and had a boring bar, hone, Sioux valve grinding machine among other engine building tools so we did a rebuild (knurled valve guides, valve job, hone, rings, bearings, timing chain, oil pump, etc) that cost all of $80 in parts back then. I beat that car like a red headed step child but the engine was still running fine at nearly 300K miles and was swapped into a Jeep after the Gremlin rusted away.
