The electrical gremlins and windshield washer issues are annoying mostly because tiny, low sports cars often require physical contortions to trace and resolve (experience speaking here), but are certainly not insurmountable. Even in 1974, these were relatively simple cars. \nI love the bumpers, the overall look, everything about this one. Good luck with the auction! His father had the car up in Chico, CA before before he brought it down to the Bay Area in 2009 to sell. He believes his father purchased it from an owner on the peninsula in 1997; see the BMC service sticker from Van Ness Ave in San Francisco on the interior of boot lid, pic 134. They (father and son) were building road racing parts for Midgets and were purchasing many of them back then, mainly to be parted out. He said two of the cars were too nice to do that to, this being one of them. They were both \"super clean low mileage cars that we just held onto because they seemed so rare.\" If you'd like, I can see if he would allow me to forward our email conversation. Also, for what it's worth, when I originally brought the car to Vintage Auto Service in Oakland, the lead mechanic/shop owner told me there's no way it's traveled 112K (more like 12K).\r\n\r\n@GigPete I'd be interested in hearing more about the wiring harness and tub cavities too. Below is a closeup of the harness in case that's helpful. \r\n\r\nA couple of other bits gathered from Terry Horler's \"Original Sprite & Midget\". The jack is as pictured in the book (albeit this one is blue vs. red) and also comes with the small plastic bag with ties. The stickers in the engine bay all look original, including the tuning guide, negative earth sticker, radiator plug removal warning, those on the SU air filters and the one on the rocker cover. So it's been left as is. Occasionally when placing the car in second gear at low speeds, you'll feel resistance. This is one of the nicest looking Midgets I've seen, and I know, because I happen to own the nicest example, a '72. I drive mine almost daily during the summer months, and even take it occasionally to the race track 250 miles away at Road America - not on a trailer, by the way. I drove down a couple years ago for a Ferrari Challenge weekend with my son, and you would not believe the compliments and joy I brought to a parking lot full of million dollar Ferraris! \r\n\r\nTo answer one of the questions raised about the round wheel arches, they appeared in '72 through '73, with some carryover into '74. One question often asked is why they went back to the squared off wheel arches, and the answer is that it offered greater strength and rigidity, especially as crash safety became a concern in the US. One other bit of trivia, only '72 had these bumpers and the round wheel arches. Although you will probably never find a true '73 or '74 with their original rubber bumper outriggers, because they were grotesque! I'm not talking about the rubber bumpers then came in during '74 through the end of production in '79. You can see photos in the book Sprites and Midgets by Anders Clausager. This is really a great resource for any owner, which gives all the year-by-year model updates, features, and dealer installed racing options: like LSD, hot cam, uprated springs, et cetera. Keep in mind, long before the Miata, Spridgets were de rigueur at any SCCA track weekend. \r\n\r\nBy the way, the folks at BaT are really the best. I went through the process of listing my Midget early in the Spring. At the very last minute, looking at my own advertisement, I got emotional and could not let it go. I apologized and asked them to stop my ad. They even refunded my deposit, and told me that they completely understand. There is often some confusion because of the time lag between the model year production and sales. Back in the day, some states titled the cars by the year in which they sold to the original owner. Hence, even though production stopped in '79 at Abingdon, you will find up to '81 Midgets in the market, as they were still being sold new through BL dealerships. Again, there are many detailed resources out there, such as Sprites and Midgets, but you can also find a great deal of information through Moss catalogs using the VIN. Sometimes these are not completely correct, though. I ran into this in changing my steering rack, where BL moved the Midget to the Spitfire steering rack halfway through '72 production. Based on my VIN, I still should have had the original, and faster, Spridget steering rack. However, mine was the Triumph Spitfire homologation instead. Are the data correct? Did someone change it before? They all have the same small bumper overriders, except the late 1974 cars (s/n 143355 - 153920) which got the big \"Sabrinas\". \nAll the \"rubber bumper\" Midget 1500's are MY 1975 and up cars.\n\nPer Horler's excellent book\"Original Sprite & Midget\", the steering rack changed at s/n 114588.
