I ended up with a 2007 Monaco Blue Metallic one, as my search didn\u2019t find an Interlagos Blue one. It has been my \u201csummer car\u201d for over a decade now and has completed 80k miles with me, (120k miles total) and every single mile an absolute joy. This is truly one of the best cars ever made. Amazing handling, tons of power, an equal amount of grip, makes all the right noises. \n\nThe only repairs required so far have been replacing motor mounts, and a new alternator - both of which were caused by a very long journey over a very remote highway which had been completely torn up prior to being repaved. Had I known the condition of that road I never would have driven that way. Oh well. \n\nOtherwise it just chews up tires and has used up two 12v batteries. The rest has just been maintenance, which I do myself. Fantastic car! So rare to see them on the road, and when they do show up here on BAT they all have far too few miles on them given how much fun they are to drive. By the end of the run BMW had really worked all the bugs out of the S54, so the scary stories you hear from M3 owners are just that, stories. I\u2019ve had both older and newer BMWs and the E85/86M\u2019s seem to be the peak of build quality for the marque. It is also well-designed in terms of ease of maintenance. I have done a lot of this and that on my car and never had an issue with accessing a component. Probably the toughest job is replacing the headlight ballasts (which involve going in via the wheel well.) The engine bay is very accessible and the VANOS filter is a 5 minute job.\n\nThe only job I have farmed out was replacing the convertible top motor (which is down in a hole that unfortunately fills with water if the car is left outside too much. They just aren't of adequate size for the application. That said, they often last well beyond 100k miles, just keep an eye on oil analysis for when the time comes that they need attention. I love this spec - and nobody has mentioned that it includes the very rare and desirable Extended Leather option (full door cards, console, sun visors, roll hoops, windshield & map light surround). Really makes the interior a much nicer place than without it. And the lack of ancient navigation is a big plus (for many).
