Better structural rigidity (although not as much of a difference as with XJ-S coupe/convertibles), and I think the lines are better. I never understood why they sold so few coupes US side compared to convertibles. Back 20ish years ago when these things were new, I was a mechanic at an independent Jaguar shop. We mostly serviced Series 3 XJ6s, XJ40s, and XJ-S V12s, but we did have XJ/XK 8s and Rs as well.\n\nSaying the timing chain tensioners are a must I suppose depends on your view. Yes, they are a known weak point (along with the water pump). I do all my own work on my cars (having both the professional mechanic background and being an engineer) and have done the job before. $1100 or so sounds about right for parts. Couldn't tell you current dealer or independent shop pricing. The water pumps are a more common issue (even 20 years ago we were replacing those). I never felt the need to do the job, although certainly it could be a consideration for the next owner.\n\nThe transmission fluid, draining the pan and replacing 3 quarts every oil change is certainly one option you could go with, although not something I've ever done or advocated for on any of my vehicles. The transmission behaves beautifully on this and I did change the fluid and filter on it at some point during our ownership.\n\nAs for more power, yes, there are definitely options. I would have likely changed the exhaust on it, however my wife drove this car more than I did in our ownership, and she liked it at the stock volume and stock horsepower. While it's not a rocket by today's standards (and certainly slower than the E55 Kompressor we had before we bought this), we really enjoyed it at the stock power level. I\u2019ve never heard of an issue after that date. My 98 tensioners were shredded. Plastic vs metal. \ud83d\ude02. The PowerhouseUK set up eluded to us worth every Penny. It\u2019s like $3200 in parts. Not sure what a European shop would charge in labor.? It turns the car basically into a 5.0. It revs faster above 4500. The Borla exhaust is not loud It has nice idle deep pangs but not cheap sounding. While I bought it rather cheaply, it has taken some money to put into good mechanical condition. I replaced the fuel pumps and relay to correct an intermittent no start condition, and most of the belts and hoses. Most recently, after a trip to the Tail of the Dragon (where it acquitted itself VERY well), I had the brakes replaced ($1500) and the timing chain assembly ($4000), all at a very good, but pricey foreign car shop. \r\n\r\nThe key items in all these cars are the water pump, thermostat/housing, timing chains, and, if a convertible, the hoses that operate the top latch. With all these properly maintained, these are superb touring cars, fast, reliable, and great in the twisties. I rewatched the twice and I didn't see anything. It might have been over a bad patch of road or the way I was holding my phone. Normally driving the car there's not steering wheel shaking, I even noted that towards the end of the video. Also whenever I change the oil I check the tie rods and ball joints while the front end is off the ground and I can tell you as of the last oil change (which was at 67k miles) they were tight.\n\nRegarding the sound from the rear of the car, the phone does make it sound louder than it is. However as I noted in the video, the rear end does groan a bit. That groan is from the differential as it changes with speed and load, it does not change going over bumps. It's actually quieter at 85 than at 70.\n\nI have had this on the lift and there is no noise or play in the pinion bearing. The output stub axles have a few thousands of in-out play which is normal on them. There is no significant play in the differential gear, and when I changed the differential fluid, while it was very dark, I didn't see any metal shavings or indications of internal problems.\n\nMy understanding is that from the factory, some of the tolerances on setting the differentials weren't ideal from the perspective of keeping sound down, but were still reliable. When I was a mechanic I probably worked on another 50 or so of the things, both V12s and 6s. So I definitely agree with the preference of the 12, and also agree that the maintenance on them really isn't a big deal. I put 30k miles on my first XJ-S in one year, it never let me down.\r\n\r\nAll that said, the AJ6 is a great engine, and its lighter weight vs. the V12s plus easier servicing are two attributes I wouldn't mind. Only thing is that it would definitely need a 5-speed, and not the factory one that some of them had. One of my customers had a factory original 93 XJS convertible with the 6-cylinder and 5-speed that he'd bought new. It was fun to drive, but that Getrag was too soft for me as far as transmissions go.\r\n\r\nOne thing I've always wanted to do if I get another V12 XJ-S is to make my own take on Bradley Smith's twin-supercharged '85 XJ-S.
