It's just standard operating procedures. They are not that tough to remove so you can get a nice clean paint job in that area. Hard to say anything negative about the car....it was done that well. Attention to detail is very good. My only change would have been to try and locate a stock Leistritz muffler (they are the best IMHO) and I would have restored the fan also. He has good taste and likes his cars done a particular way, even if he isn't going to keep them. \r\n\r\nAs for the cost of restoration, I have in excess of 2000 hours in this car which is not uncommon for a complete disassembly and reassembly with overhaul of all components. If you total the replacement parts, sublet operations and painting materials you will find it totals near $70,000. For a 2.7l engine of this vintage, i'd say this car is doing very well. \r\n\r\nHP is a misleading way to measure the \"useable\" output of an engine. Torque and more specifically, the torque curve is a much better measure. HP is simply a mathematical derivative of Torque HP=(Torque x RPM/5252). Therefore, we could theoretically have an engine with very little torque but high HP simply by increasing its rpm's; this is a formula one car. Not useable on the street because it would need to rev to 10rpm simply to leave the stoplight.\r\n\r\nAn engine's ability to generate HP (or even torque) is linked to its dynamic volumetric efficiency....how much fuel/air mixture it can cram into the combustion chamber quickly. For NORMALLY apsirated engines, this is determined by the combination of the head/cam. A \"bigger\" cam opens the valves more (and for longer) so that more air can enter. The problem is that with a big cam, the engine looses vacuum at lower rpm (which also helps suck mixture into the chamber). With this low vacuum, the engine becomes inefficient at lower rpm; These type's of engines only generate power at higher rpm when the vacuum increases sufficiently......when they \"come on cam\". So, when building an engine, one has to balance the street ability versus the overall power at high rpm.\r\n\r\nModern engines overcome this using variable cam intakes (porches variocom) which allows for higher vacuum throughout the rpm range thereby achieving the best of both worlds.\r\n\r\nLikewise supercharges overcome the low vacuum simply by using forced air induction....Turbochargers less so because they need rpm's to generate the forced air induction.\r\n\r\nI say all this because many people have unrealistic expectations with respect to older streetable normally aspirated engines. You can put a H4 glass bulb directly into the sugar scoop housings which is exactly what was done here. A smart upgrade for lighting which doesn't impact the visual of originality (aside from a slightly flatter bulb appearance). Under the car, the performance has been upgraded considerably. Starting with a car which didn't have the original engine available explains a lot of the choices - why not make it drive significantly better than original if it can't have its original engine?\r\n\r\nAs for the gearbox - take note of the significant upgrades present. The intermediate plate upgrade, etc. this isn't a stock or used up 901 and should be up to the task at hand. I don't think Terry mentioned the clutch but it also is upgraded to the task here.\r\n\r\nThe chosen rear spring plates allow for simple/easy ride height and corner balancing. A provision that was not there in the 1971 originals (had to index the torsion bars) and even later models had a more cumbersome adjustment. That's a very practical and useful upgrade.\r\n\r\nIn my view, there is nothing wrong with PMO's and the ignition system of choice here. While it isn't MFI.....it certainly works well. Sub 200Hp as measured at the wheels is nothing to laugh at and as Terry points out, the torque curve here is generally very usable and the car will have a great driving character.\r\n\r\nThis car is sweet in so many ways. I've laid eyes on it first hand and I don't think the photos do it justice. The sugar scoop trim rings are original to the car, the sealed beam headlights are Bosch H4 with improved bulbs. The fog lights are as came original from 1969 to 1973. They are brand new old stock.
