My niche can be its history. I\u2019m still working so I want to at least get something substantial posted now before my week starts. It\u2019s a lot so I\u2019m gonna break it up over a few nights, here we go. \r\n I was told It arrived from the factory for a gentleman affiliated with a dealership as his personal vehicle. The second owner is friends with my colleague and buddy of 22 years and counting. He owned a supply company in Ventura County and used it as his highspeed rail between there and the Palm Springs area, mostly cruise control (but added a radar detector)! He needed a back seat and I took over in 2004. It resides at the base of Angeles Crest Highway and has shuttled one of 3 kids to Newcomb's Ranch early mornings for breakfast over the years. Always back in his barn before 8 when all the dare devils take over. Nothing changed from stock except the following: Full bumper/hood/mirror PPF, swapped amber to smoked, and GMG Bolt on GT Harness bar in matching powder coat. Harnesses were never fitted, its pristine and removeable from its four anchor points. Owner #2 hardwired the radar detector cleanly out the windshield side of the overhead light console. \r\n I had a well-respected shop with zero previous relationship perform a thorough PPI (photo 108), including paint readings and rev data. I will post an entertaining yet very well produced clip for those who are interested in rev data translation. It will confirm how this vehicle was treated from new.\r\n I have tried to be as objective as possible so far, but let me finish with this. If you\u2019re a collector, there are a few minor things from the PPI to restore that I will elaborate on this week. If you\u2019re an enthusiast, enjoy it, but respectfully and within your comfort zone. Many of you may have driven a 996T, incredibly versatile and stable for the numbers it puts down. If anyone out there has been in a GT2, they will concur it\u2019s not that. It\u2019s a weaponized version of that. it\u2019s a refined anger with no algorithms or PSM co-pilots. Regardless of who you are, take care of it and know your limits because this thing is a scalpel. Only one item was a surprise to me. \r\nItem 1: Glovebox: Handle came unattached and replaced at dealer. Detached again a few years later (photo 78). Everything works, PPI inspection couldn\u2019t find handle hiding under passenger seat.\r\nItem 2: Carbon trim: option codes XKD (side air vent) and XKJ (defroster strip) have de-bonded (Photos 63 and 48). The rest of the carbon package is intact and glossy. This is a well-documented 996 issue for these specific parts. The aluminum versions don\u2019t have this problem. \r\nItem 3: Drivers rear brake duct under the wing: Marked as \"cosmetic and non-critical\". Comparing photo 35, you will notice the inside corner of this plastic part dips lower than in photo 45. No sign of impact, nothing broken, cracked or missing. \r\nItem 4: Underbody dent passenger side front tub. Had to run over a rock to avoid much worse. Cracked the front spoiler (replaced) and left a shallow baseball sized dent in the underside of the trunk cavity. Both my 2009 mechanic (when it occurred) and the 2022 PPI mechanic assured me no functional or structural parts were damaged, just a dent in a non-critical spot. It can be seen in photo 101, top corner of right gray circle. FYI, while we\u2019re under the car, the streaks in photo 100 are my sons attempt at wiping the dust off for the pics before the car was lowered.\r\nItem 6: Front hood strut fail. My nemesis. Temperature dependent. While I\u2019m attaching the battery tender in the garage, think Venus Fly Trap. It really hurts. They\u2019re fine above 70 degrees or so (see photos). \r\nItem 7: Both rubber PCM knobs sticky to the touch. This was the surprise from the PPI and yes, they both are. I just checked and everything works fine, so dust off your CDs. I\u2019ve never used it. Frankly, two soup cans on a string sound better than this system. Do any of you out there hold season tickets to the opera? Have you ever put on your tux, made your way to the concert hall, pocketed a few of the complimentary cough drops on your way to comfy seats in your private balcony, and then whip out your kazoo to play along with the visiting Stuttgart Philharmonic?
