I personally have not had a fan belt problem in 30 or 40 years. My Bonneville race car, (the Clean Air Corvair), runs at 7500 rpm without any failures. The muffler on this car would provide greater control while still keeping the stock setup. According to the description here on BAT, The car was originally outfitted with a turbo and then somebody somewhere along the line put a dual exhaust naturally aspirated engine into it. The final engine overhaul replaced the original turbo back into the car, though with a few new internals based on a later turbo. The 1965 and 1966 turbo configurations were capable of 180 horsepower not 150, So it's possible that this turbo is more powerful than it was upon assembly though If I'm understanding the history correctly it's still the original turbo engine block. Because of the simplicity of this setup, the more heat you can control the more power you can get out of the engine. I'm sure that the exhaust was wrapped because of that. I believe having a plastic fan is unique to this car although I don't know for a fact if it is unique to the entire Devin-C set up. The General Motors fans went from steel in the 1960 model, to magnesium in the 1964 to 1969 models. There were experiments with other configurations at the time, but magnesium won out in the end.\r\n I have a 1966 turbo on my Corvair and the only time I've ever thrown a belt was with the fan belt incorrectly adjusted, early in my ownership of the car. Corvair fan belts should be a little bit loose--looser than an owner really wants when they're sitting there fiddling with the car and realize how loose it is--because the expansion of the aluminum under load will tighten up the belt properly when you're driving around. At the time, my belt had been adjusted too tightly. It's also important to install the correct sized fan belt, which is thinner again than any Corvair observer probably thinks they should have. But keep in mind the only thing that that belt is running is the fan and the alternator.\r\n\r\nIf the buyer is so inclined, since the engine on this is slightly adjusted (though still stock) anyway, and the fan on it is one that was not offered stock on a Corvair engine, there would be no issue in replacing the fan with a \"Nash Fan,\" a fan developed over the last 20 years and invented by a Corvair racing enthusiast named Kevin Nash. It's aluminum and specifically designed to work with the stock Corvair shroud system. It has been documented to cool better, allow for less loss of horsepower because of its weight, and just generally sit on the engine looking awesome. If anything, any Corvair engine running a Nash fan would actually last longer and be more valuable. That engine had/has the Delrin plastic fan that a group of GM engineers were working on to replace the heavy welded steel engine cooling fan. Bob Benzinger explained at a National Corvair convention why the plastic fan was not placed into production. The test engineers were running a cold weather test with the heater running at full blast on a snowy highway. The car suddenly began filling with noxious fumes. Investigation revealed the the voltage regulator had failed and had overcharged the battery, producing hydrogen sulfide gas. That gas was drawn into the cooling fan (the battery is in the engine compartment) and the Delrin began degrading, producing formaldehyde. The Corvair heater draws engine cooling air into the passenger compartment. A halt in the production of the plastic was ordered and a new steel fan was used for 62-63.
