I remember in College my economics professor postulated that the doom of the Edsel was that Ford marketing research indicated there was an untapped market between the Ford and Mercury price range. That market did not actually exist, and even if it did, it was wiped out by the 1958 recession. Most carmakers had a down year in 1958 and it was a disastrous time to try to start up a new marque. Ford rebounded by ditching the Edsel and launching the Falcon to fill the need for a low priced option for the recession shocked masses. The decision to kill the Edsel was made before the 1960 model year was launched. FoMoCo deliberately limited production of the 1960 Edsels to meet their contractual agreements with their dealers. This is 'bring a trailer' in name only anymore for project cars. \nI would not call this Edsel nearly original however - it is a mild custom IMHO. It would have all the same pluses and minuses of any other '59 Ford. All the '58 Edsel unique stuff pretty much got the axe for '59 and '60. If you can deal with a 63 year old Ford you can deal with a '59 Edsel. \n\nAnd as mentioned there were several things that doomed the Edsel. in addition to the very real gap between Ford and Mercury at the time, the marketing guys also believed there was a gap between Mercury and Lincoln. The Edsel was supposed to fill both gaps somehow, so there were Mercury based Edsels for the upper gap and Ford based Edsels for the lower gap. Can you think of any other car line that was both above and below its sibling? That caused a mass of confusion with potential buyers. They saw the ads touting the entry level Ranger for ($49?) more than a top line Ford and walked into dealers who stocked up on the upper tier Edsels because they were more profitable, but cost more than a top line Mercury. And the potential buyer got mad, or confused, or both, and left. \n\nThe styling between the upper and lower lines also looked identical. Unless you had them side by side an average person might be hard pressed to tell if you had the Ford based or Mercury based car. If you were 'flush' enough to trade in your Mercury for a car that was a step up from a Mercury you would want someone to notice your increased social status (recall this was the 50's). Some folks would be uncertain if you traded up or traded down if they saw an Edsel. So they likely lost upper tier sales to Buick and Chrysler. No mistaking those as a step down from a Mercury. The Mercury based Edsels were a '58 only phenomena. \n\nOctober '57 Sputnik launched. An awful recession immediately followed, remember what 2007/8 was like for us? Buyers postponed purchase or moved to smaller and cheaper cars. I believe I've read that Rambler was the only domestic brand that had a decent sales year in '58. Everyone else had a horrible year. \n\nWhen the E- car division was formed it was E for experimental. They were supposed to look at all sorts of technologies, front wheel drive, air suspension, fuel injection, supercharging, turbocharging, advanced electrical/electronics, advanced braking and suspension. The marketing guys ran with that although almost none of it except the somewhat finicky Tele-touch push button transmission made it past the 'whiz kids' finance guys. The marketing guys never went back to see what features they were going to get. The Edsel was a failure in concept and marketing, a Harvard Business School textbook case. We had it about 5-6 years and it was known all over central New York\u2019s state on the horse show circuit as it towed our heavy home made double horse trailer and our buckskin and quarter horses all over the region to compete in gymkana events. I recall it had a \u201cbig six truck engine\u201d in it with a 3 speed manual tranny on the column. During the week my folks commuted between Oswego and Syracuse at 5:30 AM and frequently broke through the snow drifts on the road before the plows got out during the real winters we had back then. Even then Edsel\u2019s got snickers and rolled eyes but this car was solid and just ran and ran and ran. About the only plastic on that Ranger were the tail lights, everything else was built like a tank. \u201cCrumple zones\u201d\u2026\u2026.ha, \u2026.whatever the Edsel hit got crumpled! When my folks sold the car it got passed to my brother in law who also used it to pull horse trailers to shows and travel the countryside shoeing horses. There was a running change to castings for the FE motors and water pumps in late '63 production to add the bosses for mounting alternators prior to the beginning of '64 model year for example.
