But built about 800 cars before this one.\r\nThe '79s were given roughly 200 upgrades and fixes during the downtime when the Speke plant closed and production started in Canley, Triumph's home factory in Coventry. The improvements, to the cooling, ignition and electrical systems, made the TR7 far more reliable.\r\nThis car looks like an unmolested original. If it has the 3.90 rear axle, it will be pretty quick around town. There are so many ways to really improve the TR7. A set of KYB shocks, lowered springs, bigger front brakes, thicker anti-roll bars, etc. They don't cost a lot and really transform the car.\r\nThe TR7 today is probably the best value of all the classic British sports cars. It has the most civilized and comfortable interior, handles well, looks far younger than its age.\r\nYou still need to look after it frequently. After a series of body on chassis TRs it was a revelation in handling, ventilation, and comfort. \n\nI loved every, well, almost every, minute with it. \n\nIt did manage to turn itself off in the middle of the highway, while crossing the three mile long Tappan Zee bridge during rush hour, then miracle of miracles, healed itself and restarted before I had slowed enough to be featured on the evening news. It also managed to split the tail shaft of the transmission while on the Massachusetts Turnpike on Christmas Eve. My partner and I had gone to Boston to buy some parts for her BMW 1602. We were cruising along on the way home and went through an somewhat abrupt dip in the road, not a pothole or bump, just a dip. Next thing we smell is gear lube. Pulled over, checked underneath, saw the split tail shaft and suggested that we might not make it home. She confirmed that I would no longer be welcome by her family if she missed midnight mass, so on we drove. The trans was welded into fourth gear when we got home. Fortunately parts were plentiful and cheap. \n\nThe positives were hundreds of blissful hours spent carving up back roads, entrance and exit ramps, and setting new time records on our runs through the state parks in the area. \n\nI've always felt the convertible is a very good looking car. Drop the suspension just a little bit and it looks even better. I'd guess the service guy tried to charge it with R-134a which doesn't work in the TR7's R-12 system. Obtaining R-12 these days is a bit of a challenge but it can be found and I'd guess that once charged with R-12 the A/C would work fine.\r\n\r\nAlso the good news for potential CA bidders it looks like it's got all smog equipment is in place so it could be tested and registered in CA with a minimum of fuss.
