The judging standards are extraordinarily high, and they are not issued every year. \r\n\r\nHere is the excerpt from the ZCCA Judging Manual about the Gold Medallion: \r\n\r\n\"Holders of this prestigious award will have achieved the highest level of restoration or preparation a show car can achieve. So in keeping with the Toyo theme, I replaced them with the Toyo Extensa AS II. I felt those were historically the best choice, and plus there are not many options left in 215 60 R15. Aftermarket units are available but are low quality and have the ribbed bends, which are not factory correct. I was able to have a local shop recreate a section of the intermediate pipe using a mandrel-bender to keep from having the ugly ribs, and while preserving as much as the original pipe.\r\n\r\nThe sound is identical to the factory and is quite comfortable for long cruises. Also in olive drab green, which due to EPA regulations, costs about 30x more per pound than the other colors and is nearly impossible to find someone to perform.\r\n\r\nCast aluminum parts - Throttle body, \"V6 3000\" intake cover, alternator body were all Vapor Blasted to restore original finish with extraordinarily beautiful results. The \"V6 3000\" intake cover was repainted with high temp paints: correct crinkle finish and correct factory color, and sealed with clear coat. The Vapor Blasting enable the preservation of the correct factory CNC swirl marks.\r\n\r\nRubber Parts - Unsightly rubber parts were just replaced with OEM Nissan parts where ever possible.\r\n\r\nAftermarket replacement stickers were used on the Relay box and ASCD (Cruise Control) box. Pop-up headlights, t-tops, funky angular styling. Plus they have a 5-speed manual, A/C, relatively cheap to acquire. Very easy to maintain, and inexpensive to insure. They can also be made to go very fast for very little money. The engine is pretty robust and can handle high horsepower.\r\n\r\nSome people complain about parts availability, but frankly, I can still get 98% of the maintenance parts from my local Nissan dealer in 1-2 days. These cloth seats are also one of the softest and comfortable materials- I remember getting into cloth foxbody seats and thinking how rough and itchy that material was. The T tops and sound deadening in the cabin is of high regard for the 80s- I was shocked to experience the sounds and chassis flex noises coming from the ultra premium ZR1 of a few years post Z31 production. \r\n\r\nI had an 84 Z, automatic, NA, not nearly as nice as this example.
