So feel free to consider my comments accordingly.\r\n\r\nSecond, before anything else, between the photos, the videos, and the notes included in the post, this is simply a great BaT presentation. It\u2019s precisely the kind of documentation you want if you\u2019re bidding on a car online. I always advise never to buy an HF Fulvia without confirming that the (often obscured) body stamp matches the chassis plate; here the stamp in photo 91 matches the (original) chassis plate in photo 92 \u2013 and I\u2019ll always take a beat-up original chassis plate over a repro. This is a real Series 2 1600 HF \u2013 one of 3,690 built between 1970 and 1973.\r\n\r\nAnd the S2 \u201c1600 HF\u201d is the car I was looking to buy before I bought my S1 15 years ago (though I can\u2019t really believe it\u2019s been that long). The S1 \u201c1,6HF\u201d that @professorgearhead virtually stole to replace this, is the rally homologation special, but the 1600HF is a much better value for money. It lacks the iconic large headlights that give the S1 its \u201cFanalone\u201d nickname, it lacks the S1\u2019s weight-saving alloy doors & lids, and the engine officially has 1 bhp less. So in exchange for about 90% of the performance the S1, the S2 typically costs about half as much. As I said, much better value for money.\r\n\r\nThe list of what\u2019s wrong here is very short and utterly trivial. The \u2018HF stripes\u2019 should start at nose of hood and end at end of trunk lid; they shouldn\u2019t extend down valence, either front or rear, as here. The \u2018HF\u2019 grille badge should be to the upper left of the shield, not the lower right. And as the notes in photo 96 indicate, the truck should be semi-gloss black instead of body color, and the tool kit is from a later Fulvia \u20183\u2019 or a Beta. That\u2019s it from what I can tell.\r\n\r\nOne thing that\u2019s not noted (unless I missed it) is that the rubber buffers at the ends of the front transverse leaf spring have been replaced by works-type rollers (photo 86). Given that the front spring has been rebuilt, it\u2019s likely plenty supple enough with the rollers. And it does save having to replace the buffers every so often, as the rubber tends to distort with age and use. But the rubber does slightly help the ride, so it\u2019s basically a matter or personal preference.\r\n\r\nAlso as a matter of personal preference, I prefer a leather-wrapped Ferrero \u2018HF\u2019 steering wheel to a wood-rimmed one. That said, if you\u2019re going with wood, you can\u2019t beat a correct Nardi (which, as photo 100 shows, still has its original \u2018Nardi\u2019 horn push in case the new owner wants to swap it out).\r\n\r\nIn short (though it seems too late for that...), this example has been @professorgearhead \u2018s personal, hands-on project for several years. But Solex aren\u2019t bad carbs at all, and between WWII (before which Lancia used Zenith carbs) and the mid-\u201970s, Lancia used both Solex and Weber.\r\n\r\nThere\u2019s a simple \u2013 though perhaps not obvious \u2013 reason the Fulvia engine runs Solex sidedrafts (PHH for the 1300s and DDHF for the 1600 here) instead of Weber DCOE or Dell\u2019orto DHLA. \r\n\r\nAs discussed on other Fulvia threads, this engine is very short by virtue of being a V configuration, but it still has a single head. With a pair of twin-choke sidedrafts, this means that each carb will be feeding one cylinder on the \u2018far side of the head and one on the \u2018near\u2019 side. And because of the V configuration the intake ports for those pairs of cylinders are closer together than they would be on an inline-4.\r\n\r\nAnd the barrel spacing of a Solex PHH or DDHF is significantly narrower than a Weber DCOE or Dell\u2019orto DHLA, which means Solex twin-sidedraft barrels better align with the intake port spacing. And the engine runs perfectly well on the Solex. Lancia engineers didn\u2019t just guess at carb setup; the entire engine system, including the stock airbox is engineered to work together (in stock form, the engine makes more power with the airbox than with open trumpets).\r\n\r\nFor competition purposes, the Reparto Corse converted exclusively to DCOE/DHLA after the 1971 season, and those carbs needed a special intake manifold (known among fulvisti as a \u2018Gp. 4 manifold\u2019) to spread the ports enough to work with the wider barrel spacing. And you can run a Fulvia with DCOE/DHLA on the street, as I did for a few years; manifolds and/or adapters are available. The Marelli distributor is mechanical, there are no vacuum advance or water chokes to clutter up the engine bay like x1/9/124. The points, rotor, and condenser are all readily available. The cap is a premium but also available. These are complex little engines but in a very simple and straightforward way. The only tool you might need for service is a spark plug socket that will fit in the narrow wells. I use a lawn mower socket from Lowes. I couldn\u2019t agree more. \n\nWhat he doesn\u2019t mention, though, is that \u2013 even with the bigger 1750 and 2000 engines, the GTV is carrying more weight per bhp than a 1600 Fulvia, and far more weight in general. Stock for stock (meaning with bumpers still attached), a 2000 GTV weighs nearly 500 lbs more than this 1600HF; a 1750GTV is carrying 300 more. On a flat, straight highway a 2000GTV will walk away from a 1600HF, but in the canyons the opposite is true \u2013 particularly if you understand how to drive FWD.\n\nDon\u2019t expect this to go for a small premium over a Fulvia 1,3. All idiot lights function. Immediate high oil pressure on startup. Oil pressure is excellent. No blowby at air box. Compression test shows healthy engine. No leak down test. Engine pulls strongly to 5,000 RPM. I\u2019ve never taken it beyond that. Stock 1,600 A arms with new bushings and upper balljoints. On gentle throttle there can be stuttering at around 2,200 RPM\u2014typical of 1,600. Jets are new. Handbrake holds on a hill. Car tracks beautifully at speed, and brakes strongly without pulling. Coolant temperatures with normal (I drilled the obligatory tiny hole in the thermostat) in summer traffic. Electric fan comes on at the correct temperature. No dodgy shifting\u2014at least not by the car. Yes, I\u2019ve tested charging system and it charges correctly.
