I did this for a few reasons 1 .with a 2.56 first gear instead of 2.20 it's easier to startout .2.the drop of rpm's between gears gets down in the torque range of the 455.3. it sounds great. I got the engine as rebuilt unit . It's a 75 block (its a better casting to use to rebuild) it has ross forged pistons, arp studs ,double roller timing chain and a mild cam(about stage 1 spec).70 cylinder heads and correct date coded 70 intake. the block was decked so their are no vin numbers on it. the distributor is a replacement with no numbers. I thought i got the correct carb with the correct number on it ,but turns out someone restamped it (it's a 800 cfm which did come out till 73). the alt is the correct date coded774. the voltage reg is correct date coded. the starter is a new with no stamp. it has a gardner exhaust,all the glass is new and date coded correct. the mirrors are also date coded correct.The wheels are the correct 70 statin chrome centers with new chrome outer rims installed with the correct WG offset. Stage1s have only a handful of actual engine differences from a std. 455. Engine block, cylinder head, intake manifold, crankshaft: all of these use the same casting as well as casting numbers for std. 455 vs Stage1. The differences that bring the stage one to the legendary level are actually quite simple: The camshaft is a hotter hydraulic (although it\u2019s still incredibly mild compared to any muscle era top shelf engine) and the cylinder heads have been opened up at the factory for larger intake and exhaust valves. Other than calibration differences with the carburetor and ignition everything else is still the same as Std 455. Oh, One more thing: suction oil passage is opened up from 1/2 to 5/8\u201d With a larger oil pick up and a higher pressure oil pump relief spring. That\u2019s all it took for Buick engineers to put out LS6 performance in a much more drivable package. The correct numbers matching carburetor and distributor mean absolutely zero to get the 455 to perform as a stage one should. The components I mentioned are absolutely necessary to get Stage1 horsepower numbers. The devil is in the details and the details are as varied as buyers taste and critical demands at this level.
