It depends on what type of pistons reside within (and if this is a #s matching engine). This 72 2002 was originally an automatic based on the 253 VIN and most likely built before September 1972 and therefore should have the 121 head which is good. The regular 121 2002s came with flat top pistons generating an 8.5:1 compression ratio. As our esteemed elder stateman @Darren duly noted, if the lower end has not been modified, then it\u2019s not a ti-type engine and you are just \u201cover feeding\u201d fuel. The 121 heads had smaller capacity combustion chambers allowing for higher combustion potentials. The 2002tii and 2002ti had the raised bathtub piston combined with the 121 head which created a 9:1 compression ratio. The good news is (providing it is a pre 9/72 M10), it lends itself well to being upgraded with the bathtub pistons. For giggles and grins after Sept 72 regular US 2002s came with the E12 head which used the piano top pistons which dropped compression down to 8.1:1 to meet US smog regulations. Questions arise around mixing and matching heads and piston types. To put it simply, don\u2019t use piano tops in a 121 head, bad things happen. You don't see a lot of them (drum roll please) because many have been converted to 5-speeds. It's easier to fit the 5-speed in the 2002 with the wider automatic trans tunnels. IMHO the BMW 2002 was never intended to have an automatic transmission. It takes away a big part of the driving experience with these cars. The only ones I ever noted (back in the day) were driven by practical house wives who were afraid to drive stick. If by some very strange occurrence, the BMW 2002 automatics were to become the next big leap in value, one could always scare up a spare auto trans and drive shaft somewhere and convert it back.
