The front trunk corrosion is on the surface. I took those pictures to try to represent that area clearly. There's no other corrosion or sign of corrosion in that area. Happy to take additional photos / angles if that would be helpful. \r\n\r\nAs for the engine, I agree with @alarrick. thesamba.com has charts for Karmann Ghia VINs and engine numbers by manufacturing year and month. Based on that information, the VIN and engine numbers are in the correct range for a 1973 KG. \r\n\r\nThe seat covers and door panels were as you see them when I got the car.\r\nI bought the car in central North Carolina. The gentleman I bought it from said he had known of the car for 20+ years before he bought it. Not uncommon as it's very easy to do. \r\n\r\nThere is a way to know if the car has it's original engine but it takes time. The new owner can purchase a \"Birth Certificate\" from Volkswagen. Volkswagen will not provide the engine number but if the owner provides an engine number, Volkswagen will verify if it is or is not the original engine.\r\n\r\nThis car has seen a lot of work. The seals on the nose grills, front badge, headlights and hinge pillars are missing. The interior windlacing is missing as well. Great to enjoy as is and even great for someone who wants a good car to restore. For the final 3 years of production, 72-74, the dash received a black covering. 71 is the last year of the fake wood cover. As for the engine lid fit, this is pretty common, it's hard to find one with a great fit. This one really doesn't look that bad and some adjustment is possible with the hinges. The after market lid seals are very stiff and they tend to cause the lid to be a bit higher than needed. Also some Ghia owners disable the engine lid latch to prevent being accidentally locked out if the latch fails. It really does happen! Ask me how I know! Also these cars were hand made one at a time. You are correct about 1973 originally having the black pebble grain vinyl. This car was painted under previous ownership so I don't have all the details, but the vinyl tended to dry out and not age well so I presume it was removed and the decision was made to paint the dash the body color. He passed in 2016 a couple of days after their 61st anniversary. He always wanted a Karmann Ghia, for some reason we couldn't figure out since he never lusted after any other two seaters. One day he showed us a drawing from his high school mechanical drafting class. It was a small two seater coupe he drew in about 1947. His teacher failed the drawing calling it ridiculous. Too small and too low, and something no one would want. If you lay the drawing on a profile of the Karmann Ghia it was almost a perfect match. Some time in his 70s we asked him to make a list of all of the cars he had owned since there were a lot from before us kids came along. I think there were more than 40 at that time. Some he regretted selling, some he regretted buying. Some we had until they went to the junkyard and some left so quick you couldn't remember what color they were. My mother had the patience of a saint when it came to cars. She never acted (too) embarrassed to be seen in something that smoked, or stalled, maybe because she knew we would fix it eventually. One of my brothers had a 62 Rambler Classic wagon in college. Push button auto transmission. The ignition key didn't work; you had to short the starter solenoid with a screwdriver. And it stalled frequently. I drove mom to work in it once and it died at every stop sign and stop light. In, out, pop the hood, short start it, back in and go. She just sat there smiling. Dad's knowledge of car repair came honestly through trial and error rather than any training. It certainly didn't come from my grandfather as he couldn't back a car two lengths on a two lane road without putting it in both ditches, much less do any maintenance, probably because he was born in 1890. Dad started in his teens with an early 30s Chevy coupe he cut the top off of. He said it had hand crank wipers to be legal, but they were, of course, useless in the rain. My parents had 6 kids and were blue collar, so there wasn't money for frivolous cars, but I can remember a pair of Fiat 600s, one for parts, a baby blue Opel wagon with white interior, and a bathtub Rambler wagon. Later, there were two Vista Cruisers, and the 73 Suburban all of us kids learned to drive in. I don't remember him ever getting a ticket, or even pulled over.
