There are several unique items on the 1973 H1. Instruments show a small \"H1\" low on the face at 6-o'clock. Tailpiece carries a black and white stripe. \"Capacitor Discharge Ignition\" on sidecover is black instead of green as on '74. Most important is the exhaust. One piece header and muffler with right side exhausts bolted together at rear end and center and left exhaust having a mounting bracket in the front. Originality on these bikes accounts for a lot. Many were butchered. Mine spent most of my ownership in the shed while I jetted and sync'd the carbs. When I finally did ride it, the clutch was stuck. The best way to cure that is to whack it hard, which I did. Up she went! Clutch unstuck, I wound it through the gears, put it back in the shed and sold it shortly thereafter and bought a Husky SuperMoto. I figured if I was going to be riding a wheelie machine, it might as well be one that could stop and handle. The one ride was fun though, one of these will certainly remind you that you have a heartbeat. The 69 was in basically an A-7 350cc frame with a 500cc engine. By 71 they had beefed it up a little but not extended the wheelbase until 73. It was riders inexperienced with 2 cycle power bands, that red lined third gear and tried to immediately do the same when they shifted into fourth, that gave it that nickname. It was not a controlled slow front wheel lifting off the road. You had to push back hard as you shifted. Otherwise it could immediately flip. No time to compensate. You could end up with 300 lbs of motorcycle riding you at ~80 mph, not the other way around. The early ones were not very forgiving. Me and my two buddies bought three identical H1's in 1969 after a couple days of bargaining we got em out the door from Oakland Harley Davidson / Kawasaki for 895 dollars each ! We were all 17 at the time. In reality it was a promotion to get em out into the public but a great deal. We rode em hard and fast and in reality they handled no worse than what we were used to ( old Beezers and Triumphs that did nothing well) The difference was that they could out accelerate anything at the time (and pretty decent brakes for the day) including built Harleys and once you mastered the throttle could wheelie at will ( less drag on acceleration and very manageble with practice) . We rarely raced each other because the performance was so linear and consistent it was like we were chained together but what great fun running circles around our older buddies that had built custom Harleys and Triumphs and a couple of Nortons. I put rigid struts on mine so I could warm up the rear tire and get better launches. Early bikes without a steering damper (only a friction adjuster) had a nasty habit of a high speed wobble while accelerating past 95 but if you kept in it would smooth out about 105 . Top speed was limited by the load and the clutch. The stock clutch would slip at about 115 ( I weighed about 160 at the time) ... We changed over to a Barnett clutch with heavier springs and could get through the head shake quicker and improve the top speed up to about 130. Sold it in 1970 to \u00fcpgrade to a CB750 K0 ( Sandcast) but thats a story for another day.
