The Euro models did not have sealed beam headlights or turn signal lights above the front bumpers. Well, the events of one fine day certainly changed my attitude towards accident victims. The facts of the accident were truly ironic. In our town there was a notorious firm of ambulance chasing lawyers. You know the type, advertising everywhere, on bus benches, bad late night TV or daytime cable. They're point always being \"In an accident, you've been hurt whether you know it or not! Come see us!\" Anyway, getting back to the wreck of the 220S. In traffic, I stopped, the big Cadillac behind me didn't. There was a huge full-size Buick station wagon stopped in front of me. The impact was so severe my classic Mercedes was quite propelled into the rear of the Buick. Poor little Benz was shortened 3 - 4 feet on both ends! and yes, the passenger compartment stayed intact so that the doors would in fact, open properly. A good thing. What didn't stay in place was the driver's seat - the impact caused it to break free from it's tracks or the floor (I no longer remember, it was 30 years ago) and I flew back, striking my head on the squab of the rear seat. When the mayhem stopped, i remained laying on my back, contemplating the beautiful wool headliner of my Mercedes. The at fault driver of the Cadillac behind me walked up, and said through the window, \"Oh gee, I'm so sorry. But I'm sure you're not hurt, right?\" and then she handed me her card. In spite of my pain, while awaiting for the ambulance, I just could not stop laughing upon seeing her card and hearing her exclamation! She was a principal of this well-known law firm! Post log - the emergency room x-rays found a fracture in a cervical vertebra, fortunately not involving the spinal cord but it still sounded really impressive when I presented my medical bills and records to her insurance company! They didn't even argue with me over what I asserted was the value of the ponton, they just rolled over and paid everything, including my claim for a very real neck injury that required months of physical therapy! Having said that, in 1975 I was driving from Massachusetts to the Philadelphia Navy Yard in my 220 with a friend who thoughtfully brought along a 2-quart bottle of home-made hard apple cider which we drank on that 5 hour? drive. Where the Garden State Parkway crosses the New Jersey Turnpike, I got off the parkway and onto the pike. If I recall correctly, once past the tollbooth the road goes straight then makes a 90 degree turn to the left. I was doing about 50 and heading for the stone wall right at the apex of the curve. I spun the wheel to the left, the back end broke loose and then the front end started to slide and when the car was pointing in the right direction, I cranked the wheel the other way and stomped on the gas and it took off in the direction I needed to go. It's the first and only time I was ever in a 4 wheel slide and I haven't touched cider since. It was then an almost 20 year old car and we did the 1100 mile trip at least 6 times a year getting around 50 miles per gallon (imperial). \r\nOne time the clutch let go about 100 miles into the trip. It was on a Saturday afternoon and all service stations were closed. We decided to do the trip anyway. Found that at the right rpm you could change old Missus Benz's gears. The diesel starter was strong enough to get the car going in 1st gear... we arrived about 20 hours later. A college friend and I replaced the clutch plate in the parking lot of our dormitory.
