The mechanic believed that somehow, condensation had occurred from lack of use and improper storage....who knows ? The transmissions I found were the older, longer Getrag 245 from 80-82. It required having the older drive shaft and a couple of other items to make it work in the '83 and the car is perfect now. The '83 E21 is the only one to use a Getrag 240 which is the same shorter 5 speed from the '84 E30 but I believe the E30 speedo drive is electronic. May be hard to believe but really not an ego thing. More pride than anything else. When I put the vehicle up for sale 5 years later for 125K I was deemed certifiable. Upon my purchase car was gone over by Neil at Star Motors. That cost was 20K. Eventually I consigned the car to Kienle in Germany. Sold in 3 months and my end was 145K.
