Personally I farmed that out to an expert and it was worth the cost. This one the early model with the round barrel instument cover which appears to be very clear. And has the exhaust tips on it you don't see all that often. I've resolved to riding mine (5300mi and the factory touring kit) only in the winter time here in AZ due to the heat- like any rotary they don't like overheating and low oil. Both of which causes very costly apex seal repairs. For Rowdy; you might research Rotary Motorcycle and be surprised what you read. In a fifth gear roll on they were dead even until about 80 mph, then the 1000 would pull away .You could put your hand on the engine, (pod), and you couldn't tell if it was at idle or redline. If Mazda rotaries weren't problematic, Suzuki would have came out with other models they had in the works I believe. They sound like outboard motors! They had a loping problem on deceleration, the fix for that was to throw away one set of points as they came with 2. At Suzuki school in Chicago, the instructor liked RE5's and we spent alot of time talking about them. The class was for the 4 cylinder and shaft drive bikes. Indeed a unicorn. I don't remember the numbers, but there were not that many imported into the US. I opened my Suzuki dealership in 1977, and these were no longer available. At least new that is. We had two that would come to our shop. One of those was owned by the Regional Suzuki Service Rep. He had painstakingly gone through his RE5. His bike ran so smooth, you really couldn't tell if was running. He let us take it for a ride. As mentioned below, what a sweet, well handling bike. I seem to recall it weighed less than 500lbs. The only real drawback was the tremendous heat it generated. The engine itself wasn't too bad. But that big radiator in front would cook you in traffic, or a stoplight. The Rep admitted he liked riding it in the colder months. This is up there with the XN-85 Turbo in rarity. And to find one in this condition is amazing. This is a great chance to have one of the few rotary powered motorcycles ever made. Great job on this bike Sobstory. If you are at highway speed and run low on gas, by the time you switch over to reserve thee bike will be so lean that it fouls the plug and won't run for s***. You could accelerate smoothly, or you could go like a Bat out of Hell if you wanted to. \r\n\r\nDon't know if it's true or myth but I was told Each side of the rotary was approx 500 cc, so a full revolution was 1500 cc displacement. I know it felt like moving a beast if you were trying to kick it over ! \r\n\r\n Balance was reasonable, but it felt top heavy to me. The handling of the frame design was superior to any of its Japanese competitors in the day. In the GS family, the forks and shocks were better than any other Japanese OEM. I've known people with piles of parts and parts bikes, but I can count on 1 hand all of them I've seen on the road. \r\n\r\nThe Instrument pod shape reminds me of the maid's head on \"The Jetsons\".\r\n\r\nI bought a super clean Cortina GT out of Vancouver BC back in 2001 (when planes weren't flying yet). I was riding a 850 Commando when the GS1000 was introduced. I did some roll ons from 60 with a guy at work with a new 1000E, which would be slightly slower than your bike due to the heavier wheels. My stock except for Dunstalls and Uni Filters Commando would pull the 1000E for a while, but when it caught up, the Suzuki would steam on past and continue to accelerate away. One of my riding buddies bought a Yamaha XS-11 It would run away from the Commando immediately in a straight line. \r\n\r\nI currently own a 1978 GS1000E and three 1000Gs, which I keep in different states. I'm pretty comfortable with them, as the rake and trail and tire sizes are similar enough to the bikes I grew up with, front wheel, rake, and trail wise, that I don't have to learn much to ride them. I still have the two Commandos too. I bought a couple GS850Gs inthe 80s to tout Alaska when I was working there.
