It doesn't take much damage to get over $1000 in repairs at any decent shop on Long Island. My guess is that the original owner just made arrangements with the insurance company to keep the car and fixed it so title never transferred to insurance company and never got salvaged and never had to go through NYS's onerous salvage inspection process.\r\nAt the time of the accident it was probably worth more to the owner than whatever the insurance company was offering in compensation to take title of the car. It was owned by an old couple that just got too old to drive anymore. So he got a great deal, but that wagon had the type of issues you would expect from an elderly driver that never goes out on the highway, only short stop and go trips, while hardly ever changing the oil! So the fine 258 straight six was all carboned and sludged up.but he himself was an AMX owner that had a 304/4brl with automatic transmission, that was totaled when he was rear ended by a dump truck. He was injured and was in a neck brace for a while, but did get a sizable settlement. So even in the neck brace he came with me to go check out the Eagle. I was amazed at the shape and how clean it looked, like new, but when I started it up is sounded bad, idled rough and had blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. But he bought it just for the car itself! That over the winter we combined the best of both cars and ended up with a very cool beach wagon! With the V8, interior front seat and dashboard, plus the AMX badges and trim pieces that finished off a great hot little beach wagon you could drive on the beach! My dad had several Hornets over the years that he used on a rural mail route because they were cheap and reliable. He always wanted one of these Eagles but they were pretty rare around here and so he considered to be too expensive for the abuse it would be subjected to. I bought and prepped one for a charity auction on BaT a couple of years ago. These are really solid, rugged cars. I did a lot of the work myself, but it still was not inexpensive. There are good on line forums to help with sorting them out and finding parts. For me to be content that this one is really ready for daily use or pass on with confidence would require a fair amount of additional work. In addition to the obvious fluid flushes,axle boots(and any damage from them being torn) the shocks and struts, brakes, every brake line and fuel line, most of the bushings, the fuel tank mounting straps, the tank itself for leaks and sludge--it is missing the skid plate. Then look for the additional fixes for known problems that the forums can help guide. This one is a good start.
