The single one were a dead giveaway for the 4-cyl cars but for the 320 you had to look at the back: only the 323i had the dual exhaust. Most likely, the damage is due to the sun. My '82 320is was in similar shape and would disintegrate if you touched it. Nothing to worry about other than replacing horse hair pad with foam and recovering. The horse hair pad has probably degraded back to individual hairs and sitting on the floor pan. I own an e30 M3 but enjoy driving my 1979 323i too. The E21 is special because:\n\n1. It\u2019s the original 3 series\n2. The shark nose and rounded tail are more stylish than the boxy e30.\n3. The twin pipes sticking out of the tail on the 323i! It\u2019s an aggressive look that was never repeated again on a BMW.\n\nI think the problem is that in the USA we only got the 320i, which had the engine from the 2002 in a bigger, heavier body. Not to mention the biggest safety bumpers ever on any car! Everybody else could get the 323i with the brand new baby six and the nice chrome bumpers.\n\nA lot of people don't know this, but Paul Bracq designed the E21 while working for BMW. We've done it bass ackwards.\r\nCutting, fabrication, welding, body, and paint have been done in fits and starts. Its now having interior completely redone. Then off to Korman for a complete rebuild and upgrade of the original engine, addition of a stage 3 turbo kit from Laurent Motors, a swap out of the LSD, and a change from the automatic to Getrag 245 5 speed.
