I grew up just down the road in Porterville. On Veterans Day each year, we had a parade. In that parade, my buddy Jerry and I would get various new muscle cars from the local dealerships to drive in the parade. We were just 16 years old. One year Jerry got a 1970 Road Runner and I had a Torino Cobra Jet. After the parade, we'd take the cars out on to the local country farm roads and drag race the cars (same areas where the locals would race on Saturday nights). He tried to fix it several times with aftermarket parts without much luck as he wasn't a mechanic. I tried to get him to take the engine to Dick Landy or Bob Lambeck as they were both within driving distance from San Diego, but he thought he could fix it. Finally he took the motor out, disassembled it with big plans that never materialized. The engine pieces laid around his garage and the car sat outside for over 20 years and was finally sold as a basket case for $5500. Once he came by with a 1969 Hemi Roadrunner with a 4 speed. The 383 4 barrel cars were fast, however no where near the Hemi. He got the car right after it had the usual PDI and wash from his dad's dealership. His dad was out of town as I was later to learn, and would never have let him have the Hemi for a Saturday night of street racing. We found a couple of friends that had fairly hot Mustangs and one that had a 1969 396 Chevelle. None of them wanted to race for any kind of money or titles. We did however try the Chevelle for fun. I was shocked at how fast that Hemi roadrunner was!! After the race which we won handily, I asked my friend if that was the first time he had gotten a Hemi from his dad. He said yes, and with a big grin said \" Probably the last time, as he is at a dealer convention this weekend in Chicago! \" For some reason the Saturday night Roadrunner show was over. The next time I saw my friend he was in a used 1964 valiant with a tired 225 slant 6cyl. in it.
