I'm 1.80m tall and i fit very easily. As for performance, 0-60 in 8 seconds is not fast, it's roughly the same as the Miata. The engine is super smooth though, it pulls very well from low revs and sounds great above 5500rpm.\r\n\r\nThe S2000 is on a different league in terms of performance, it's a lot quicker. The \u201clittle Zed that could\u201d had no problems keeping up with the crowd at 4000rpm up and over Independence Pass (12,095 ft ASL) and back. It was equally at home gathering attention while on display in front of the host hotel, where I schooled the valets in the prestige and history of the car. Every Z1\u2019s provenance is that it was the first BMW to have: glass-sealed beam headlights, a front-mid-engine layout resulting in a perfect 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, composite body structure, built in roll bar running across the top of the windshield and down the A-pillars into the chassis, plastic-sealed underside to aid in aerodynamics, an aerofoil-shaped rear muffler which directed air running under the car up and over the muffler to exit the car BELOW the trunk lid and ABOVE the rear bumper which served as its rear spoiler, the first car to feature the Z-axle multi-link rear suspension which became standard on every BMW after it including Car and Driver\u2019s \u201cBest Handling Car at Any Price\u201d 1995 e36 BMW M3, and of course the drop down doors for which the car is known and has never been equaled by any other manufacturer in a production vehicle. \n\nThe body panels are actually made of three different variations of the thermoplastic side panels, all of which required a different level of elasticity. The hood, tonneau, and trunk are all fiberglass re-informed plastic, the side panels have a little more \u201cgive\u201d, and the front and rear impact bumper covers are the most forgiving in order to reform after low speed impacts. Each type of panel received a different type of paint in order to conform to their elasticity profile and to hold up under the elements. \n\nAs stated previously, the Z1 shares many engine and electrical components with other BMWs of similar vintage, so parts are readily available for most of the running gear. E30, E36, E34, and E31parts are all repurposed in varying quantities in the Z1. \n\nThis looks and sounds like a well-sorted example with no stories that can be DRIVEN without fear for affecting its long term collectible value and status. As shown on the invoice at #161, the odometer had to be repaired. This was done very soon after I noticed the odometer wasn't working and after having driven very few kilometers with it broken. If you follow the kilometers shown on the invoices, you will see that the kilometers/miles shown is very consistent, as I drive this car very little. So I believe the kilometers shown is very close to the actual number. However, BaT states that they have a policy to say TMU in every case of an odometer repair. Reading that reminded me that the newly formed BMW Technik, in 1985, was the origin of the Z1. As its first fruit, the Z1 was a showcase for the capabilities of the group. The Z1 explored special production techniques, suspension techniques, and an unusual ingress/egress technique with its special doors.\r\n\r\nAs neat as the doors are, I\u2019m reminded of the old joke about selling toothbrushes that includes a bit about, \u201cYou need a gimmick!\u201d The doors are a way of capturing attention (or a magician\u2019s misdirection from something more significant). While people focused on the Z1\u2019s doors, BMW Technik explored a production technique that would allow them to build and update lightweight low volume cars.\r\n\r\nThere\u2019s a slim, but expensive, volume on a bookshelf in the den titled, \u201cQuick Die Changes\u201d. The state of the art for changing dies on an assembly line in the 1980s was glacial. Dies are used to stamp body panels. They sit in a hydraulic press with a piece of flat steel sheet slipped between the die halves. The press closes (presses) the die halves together and imparts a three dimensional shape to the piece of sheet steel.\r\nIt is the speed of die changes that determines whether or not \u2018custom pressing\u2019 of small lots make sense. Having to shut a production line down for hours to change dies mitigated against low volume specialty cars, especially for a company where volume production is necessary to cover costs. And the most important piece of the Z1, from a corporate perspective, was the Z-axle employed at the rear of the car. My Z1 had a very similar crack on the front right fender, and two other tiny cracks - one next to the fuel filler cap and one next to the button that opens the driver's side door. \r\n\r\nAll three were fixed using a device that looks like a gun and has S-shaped pieces that get heated and then are placed to join and keep the two sides together. Apologies for the poor description, i'm sure this device has a name but i don't know it. Bottom line, it cost around 600 Euros to fix all three and the panels look perfect.\r\n\r\nSo, if a particular Z1 is in excellent mechanical shape but you're worried about the cracks, they can be fixed relatively easily.\r\n\r\nThis looks like a very nice example and as so many people have said before: it's glorious fun to drive and the amount of looks and comments you will get are incredible.
