That induction noise coming up from the fairing whilst riding, to me, sounded like some NASCAR motor roaring...in spite of it only being 2 cylinders.\r\n\r\nYou could rumble down the streets and mothers would run out of their houses and grab their children as the monster approached! Wonderful stuff!!\r\n\r\nAs lovely as the Duke was....it did not compare to the handling of my second bike...not even close. The bike of 45 years ago was a Rickman-Triumph with the 8-valve Weslake head. I was nothing more that a rookie kid with motorcycles, but the bike was so good that even a little novice like me could drag the rear set rubbers into a new form from cornering..........amazing design. \r\n\r\nA good friend continues the ownership of the MHR to this day. Almost have approached him about a return sale....mostly about nostalgia I reckon.\r\n\r\nI did procure a second Rickman though.\r\n\r\nGood luck with the auction....the bike is stunning. Some series ones have serial numbers above where the series two started. Fiberglass tank cover and fewer decals. Some changes to seat during this small run. First few had seat that looked like it was made in high school shop class. FIVE STARS.\r\n\r\nNext 125, s/n 75-200 had a steel gas tank and Ducati decals. Sold out immediately. FOUR STARS.\r\n\r\nSo another 100 were built. Called '79 1/2. So 200-300. These were not just for the UK market. FOUR STARS.\r\n\r\n1980 model approximately 300 built. s/n300-around 600. But must have DM860 frame number to be a series one. If you find a bike with a number below 600 and has a DM900 frame number it is not a series one, but a series two early production. Has black painted forks.\r\nFOUR STARS.\r\n\r\nSERIES TWO. 1981-1982 DM900 frame from around 580 onwards with gaps from end of series one production which went as high as 630ish. Split fairing, and battery cover. Not a bad bike, but nowhere near as collectable as the series one. THREE STARS\r\n\r\nSERIES THREE 1983-1984. A dreadful bike, in every way. Mass produced. There are many still left unsold in Japan. Not collectable. ONE STAR.\r\n\r\nSERIES FOUR. 985 1000 Mille engine. A very nice bike to ride. Rides more like a Sports/Tourer. The information came directly from this auction. I understand that there were lots of changes as they were built. I believe there were three different gas tanks. One a fiberglass cover, and a tall top, and low top steel tanks. There were several seat changes as well, along with wheel changes. Some were Campagnolo, then Speedline and finally FPS. \r\n\r\nI certainly don't pretend to know everything about Mike Hailwoods. I bought my 1980 model, which was to my liking, and that's that. No need to know everything about a bike that I don't own. \r\n\r\nThe point I was trying to make, was the 1979 models are very special, and worth more than any other. But from what I see out there, they are not recognized for how great they are. I see people going nuts over a low mileage 1984 series three, thinking that all Hailwoods are created equal. Which they clearly aren't. For I wouldn't give you garage space for one.\r\n\r\nOne day I'm going to have to sell my series one. I'd like them to start taking off in price. For right now, they are selling about the price of a limited edition Honda Mini bike.\r\n\r\nI believe there is a Facebook group in Australia, who monitor every sale from the last several decades. They have compiled a comprehensive list to each one seen.
