Re grille spears, normally there are 13 in this case there are 11 and evenly spaced. There isn't really what I would call a \"tear\" but BaT's interpretation of a scrape visible just below the window crank on the drivers side door panel. There is no problem with the ignition switch which you may have noticed in the cold start video. All 120's had electric fuel pumps. What you see is a fuel pressure regulator and gauge so that the SU carbs can operate at their most efficient pressure. The coupe came to me with a 12\" pusher fan that seemed to do the job. However I realized I could get a more efficient fan in the space so had Jim Groom install the 14 inch unit. Not required and possibly overkill but when was too cool a problem? The car was painted approximately 25 to 30 years ago in Switzerland from it's condition and completeness I feel sure it was but can't swear to it. Neece on 7/27/1952\r\n\r\nHistory is blank from Dr. Neece's purchase to 2004. \r\n\r\nPurchased in 2004 by Jack Braly from an east coast Rolls Royce dealer. The story Mr. Braly got at that time is that an older Swiss gentleman had retired to Florida and brought the Jaguar with him. At some time later the gentleman traded the Jaguar in on a Rolls.\r\n\r\nHow did it end up in Switzerland? In the early 50's the majority of XK 120's were sent to the U.S. Very few were sold into Europe or England. Remember this was after WW11 and the U.S. booming financially and England and most of Europe rebuilding. It shouldn't surprise anyone that during the 50's or even 60's finding what you wanted would be easier in the U.S.\r\n\r\nJack Braly is well known in Jaguar circles as a national concours participant and winner. He is a past president of the Rocky Mountain Jaguar Club having restored eight Jaguars over period of years. Mr. Braly is also the past president of Beechcraft Aircraft Co.\r\n\r\nThe coupe had been his personal driver and he completed the 2011 Colorado Grand in it. He is also responsible for the T-5 Tremec transmission swap, alloy radiator. and discovery of the rather mysterious \"C\" Type head. (photos in gallery) There were other modifications to the car presumably while in Switzerland or before. As mentioned the history of the coupe subsequent to Dr. Neece's purchase until Mr. Braly's is in the ether. I have discovered a few anomalies previous to Braly's purchase. One of which is the number and thickness of the leaves in the rear springs. The standard spring had seven leaves and a stiffer spring was listed as \"special order\", with cars built from December 1952 this became standard. However a still stiffer unit with eight leaves became available as \"special order\" and referred to as \"Alpine\". In checking the coupe I found it had nine leaves in each rear spring, stiffer yet. It appears to be of factory origin but obviously of competition intent.\r\n\r\nI purchased the coupe from Mr. Braly, who I will from this point forward refer to as \"Jack\", in July of 2015. Interestingly it appeared on BaT on 7/17/2015 with a paragraph or two. I had been alerted to the Ebay advertisement by a friend and missed the BaT note. There were two days left on the auction not really enough time to get to Colorado to see it and hit the \"Buy It Now\" button. I must of had a premonition of good things to come because it is not in my nature not to bargain.\r\n\r\nI'm going to take a break here and have lunch. I see what I intended to say not necessarily whats on the page. Occasionally with alarming results.\r\n\r\nIn a recent conversation with \"Jack\" the reason for the alloy radiator became apparent. It seems he was at full throttle when the harmonic balancer on the crankshaft disintegrated and flew through the radiator. Before he could shut it down the motor exceeded redline by an amount to bend three valves. Removal of the head revealed the larger exhaust valves and porting. The standard head would have had 1&1/2\" exhaust valves, 5/16\" lift and an intake valve angle of 30 degrees. This head sported 1&5/8\" exhaust valves, 3/8\" lift and an intake valve angle of 45 degrees. There were no markings at the front of the plug galley where there should have been, however cast into the head below the exhaust manifold was C7707 and below that C2. All indications of a late series \"C\" replacement head. It is interesting that in Bernard Viart's book, \"The XK120 Explored\" he mentions a \"C Type\" replacement head with 9 to 1 compression ratio available late in the 120's production run. Only for thought not conjecture. \r\n\r\n The easiest way to more power is more compression. Which brings the memory of my friend Doane Spencer and his 14 to 1 Tiger. He saw the doubt in my eyes and explained, \"I linered the block and left the liners proud of the deck\". I wish I could remember how \"proud of the deck\".\r\n\r\nAt that point the engine and trans were removed. The engine gone through completely and the transmission replaced with the T5. Interestingly during this work it was discovered the flywheel and clutch assembly were found to be lightened. The block was and is the original #5167-8. \r\n\r\nThere is no history as noted from the original sale to Dr. Neece until \"Jack's\" purchase in 2004. How and when did it get to Switzerland? What about the late \"C Type\" head, lightened flywheel & other oddities that were not original? It was obviously the recipient of a body off restoration at some time in Europe with a color change from bronze to BRG, but when? Jack thought the car may have been raced, I don't. The coupes weighed 55kg (about 120lbs.) dry more than the OTS. It could have been a Rally competitor but I think not. All indications from wear and condition lead me to believe that it was the property of someone who understood high performance motoring and treasured what he had. I would like to believe that is why and older gentleman brought it with him to the U.S.\r\n\r\n@zachmac- No disagreement here and what I would have preferred also painted wheels but both color and wheels have grown on me.\r\n\r\n@Kwhal- The data plate is Swiss.\r\nFuel pump is as original but surely a replacement.\r\nToggle switches, left to right- Driving lights, fan override(thermostatic), starting carburetor, clock.\r\nConverted to 12 volt, saves 35 lbs. of extra battery and provides extra storage. I can tell you each piece I removed was packaged and saved, along with the Moss gearbox Jack Braly sent with the car, and neatly boxed I may say.\r\n\r\nI have heard so many complain here about the Moss box and don't really understand it. Jaguar used them right up to the early E Type. I've had three of them and guess must not know how to drive properly because I never had a problem with any of them. Finally, Jaguar won Le Mans five times in the 50's, the last two with D Jags were private entries not factory teams, all with Moss boxes and a motor designed in the late 40's and supplied in passenger cars into the 90's. The truck and fifth wheel trailer would never have been able to negotiate the steep, narrow road with hairpin corners to the house. The delivery driver managed to squeeze himself into the coupe's seat and fired it up. The guttural sound at idle whisked away all doubt.\r\n\r\nThe following morning I rolled the coupe into the driveway and planned to go through the whole car top to bottom. When I got to the trunk tools and jack etc. came out easily however I couldn't budge the spare. I am aware I am not as strong as I was 20 years ago but avoid thinking about it. I actually believed as many of us old bastards do that I've become more wily and patient to more than make up something lost due to time. I managed to thread a pretty heavy rope through the spokes and attempted to wrench it out of it's nest. Ended up on my backside.\r\n\r\nRegrouped with my burly young neighbor and gloves for both. We wrestled with that spare with no progress for far too long. At that point it occurred to me it wasn't meant to be in there. Fortunately the valve stem was accessible and as I bled air out of the tire there was a quite audible groaning of metal being relieved of strain. With the tire deflated it slid out easily. It so happens these Avons I love are 195X16 radials and the cross section width is much wider than the current tires everyone seems to use which are 185X16 with tread widths varying from 4&1/2\" to about 5&1/2\". The Avons measure a little over 6&1/4\" of tread width.\r\nSkinny tires and fat drivers were for the 50's. Hence the Firestone spare meets my requirements perfectly. Ok, I guess you have realized there are no short stories with old guys or perhaps just some of us.\r\n\r\nAny mods? I don't want to offend any purists who haven't been offended already but I would love to find a \"period\" drink holder. The problem is that they are flat glass. Not too many people pay attention as to what sort of mirrors that they buy, and often buy flat glass mirrors for the wings. That, as you can see, doesn't work with the narrow field of view. \r\nThe fix is easy. Install CONVEX wing mirrors, precisely the same design, from Lucas, and you will have an amazingly wide field of view. This will take a few minutes to get used to, but if you put a door handle in the view, you will no longer have a blind spot. \r\nI learned this when I was about 6, when Dad put the Lucas wing Mirrors on the Volvo split window station wagon. I was in charge of adjusting them. \r\nWhen I started driving, all the cars had the Lucas mirrors, or, if it was a sport car, the Raydot race mirrors, in convex... Just like my Lotus 11. From the number it appears this car has a history of required repairs, nothing could be further from the truth. Upon delivery I drove the car for a few months listing the things that needed to be attended to to satisfy my concept of how things should work. I will add at this point a friend told me years ago that I was \"a critical son of a bitch\", I took no offense and suggested he had low standards.\r\n\r\nWhat I noticed in those first few months was the coupe didn't track well on the highway and the steering effort was more than seemed reasonable. The carburetors seemed off, probably due to being tuned to 6-7,000 foot elevation Mr. Braly lived at in Colorado. The water pump also sounded duff to me but no leaks, yet. Ammeter fluctuations meant generator or voltage regulator had a problem. Along with all these the coupe never \"failed to proceed\", a euphemism I appreciate.\r\n\r\nI was directed to a young fellow in Richmond, Michael Vays, MJV Automotive. Michael ran a one man shop working mostly on English cars. He had just taken on the restoration of a Bentley of some persuasion to be sold during the coming August auctions in Monterey. I think he took on the coupe to clear his head from all the cobwebs a full restoration can elicit.\r\nMy instructions to Michael were simple after discussion of what I thought was needed. \"Consider the coupe yours and you're planning a trouble free drive to New York City as soon as you finish\". That was 11/1/15, subsequent invoices in December completed this phase.\r\n\r\nOn 1/1/16 my youngest son and I did the \"Anti Football Rally\" run annually out of Corte Madera. We followed a 70's era 911 over the coastal range to Hwy 1 and up the coast ending in Petaluma. The Porsche was obviously quick but it was equally obvious neither of us were familiar with the road. Following a faster car is fairly easy if both drivers are unsure of where the road leads. We hung back 150' or so and had the benefit of the 911's brake lights to guess what was ahead. What got my attention was the faint odor of brake lining after a bit and the drop off if you misjudged a corner. The brakes on a 120 are fine for the driving all of us do every day, they are not fine if you abuse them or use them to excess. That Porsche was causing excess use in attempting to keep up. My decision that disc brakes were on the list and something like a heavier sway bar to keep the inside front fender from rising the way it did. \r\n\r\nAfter that day I made a list of the things I wanted the coupe to become. I fortunately remembered a conversation I had had with Dirk Layer years before. I had complimented him on a race at the Historic's with Dave Vegher, both in similar Lotus 26R's. Dave is a friend and had won three SCCA Championships with a Lotus Elan the basses for the 26R. Dave and Dirk were nose to tail for the entire race. The Cobra's & Corvettes, etc. left in the dust with everything else including a 26R or two. The fact that Dirk could do that well with Dave astounded me. The first thing out of Dirk's mouth was \"The car was magic, the fellow who set it up fantastic\". Dirk had been racing a Lotus 23's all over the country with his father Jerry.I naturally asked who did the setup, the answer was \"Jim Groom in Berkeley\" \r\n\r\nThe balance of those invoices are my successful efforts to get the coupe where it should be with all credit to Jim Groom. Jim had raced 120's in SCCA for years. His shop was full of vintage race cars, his knowledge unquestioned in my experience. I figured I could average 60 mph and even with the stop to meet my son just south of San Jose\r\nwe would be on time. The best laid plans & so on. At the Nicasio reservoir it was socked in with fog and 35 mph all the way to Nicasio itself. Compounded with a pitch black sky at Lucas Valley Rd. and not wanting to collect any wildlife going through the canyon I wasn't making the time I expected. It was clear from the 101 and over the Richmond Bridge and on to the 880 at about 65-70 mph. A brief pit stop at Starbucks and we were on the road. Pulled into will call for tickets at 8:02. That last hour or so at 75-80+mph. She rolls as smooth as a billiard ball.\r\nLots of great cars and friendly people. We got a chance to see the over & under two liter race \r\nA lotus 26R had a very close race for the checker with a 427 Cobra. Nose to tail all the way with the 26R on top. Back in the early 80's I owned and raced a 26R, it was faster than me for a long time. Finally sold it to Japan for an unexpected profit. A few years later my driving was better and I beat the same car at the Historic's with a really fast Super 7. Not an overall win but a win in my book.\r\nAll in all it was a great day with my son at the scene of a place we seemed to gather every August. You had to feel the inputs, there were no nannie aids to make things work. You had to understand what was happening mechanically. The key was smoothness, transmissions, clutches, throttle, and brakes coordinated to provide a smooth progression of power and movement. If I am so fortunate, I promise to drive it as the seller has shown in the video, and not to allow it to languish in some sterile storage facility, or be reserved for display at stuffy concourse events. \nI love the smaller steering wheel to afford a bit more wiggle room in the cockpit, and I was surprised to see that the smaller wheel allows enough leverage to persuade those heavy steering components to alter their trajectory, but the video shows that it apparently works just fine and is rock stable even at those spirited speeds.\nI have owned several vintage Jaguars including XK's and E-Types, some quite beautiful and some a bit tattered and scruffy, but if properly sorted, they all provided that same visceral sensation when driven aggressively down a curvy road. A strange ambivalence I find unfamiliar. Ambivalence is for things I normally don't give a damn about. I do give a damn about this. If it goes it hopefully is used. I don't as a matter of course take every corner as though I were overtaking Fangio in my teenage dreams. Just cruising quickly though the canyons heading home with the windows down the sweet sound as good as a remembered song before my hearing went south. The coupe has been like that particular cabernet I used to find at Trader Joe's, the glass I looked forward to each evening no matter what the menu was. This is beginning to sound maudlin and out of character so let's get on and let me tell you what's wrong with the coupe.\r\n\r\nJack Braly told me the shift out of fifth gear was \"stiff\", it still is. If you're a ham fisted \"yanker\" of things you can possibly yank it right into reverse. If you do, it may be a lesson well learned.\r\nI haven't had that experience, handle that shift as you would a woman, gently.\r\n\r\nJack also told me not to leave the transmission in reverse as it would run down the battery with the back- up light. Well, I obviously didn't listen as carefully as I did re fifth gear. One new battery solved that. It seems the back up light/reverse wiring bypasses the ignition switch. I assume it happened when the Tremec was installed.\r\n\r\nThe speedometer is not accurate, it's slow. Once more the Tremec. However the speedo is on the other side of the dash and I look at the tachometer as a matter of choice. It's roughly \r\nten miles per hour slow. I had given my wife instructions to drive at exactly 55mph and raise her hand proceed to 60mph & another hand signal, etc. at 70mph she gave me a finger signal and I realized my scientific calibrations were over. It works out this way in 5th gear:\r\n2100 rpm = 55mph\r\n2300 rpm = 60mph\r\n2500 rpm = 65mph\r\n2700rpm = 70mph with no finger signals. I assume this carries on to infinity.\r\n\r\nThe horn doesn't work. I am not sure if it ever did but I think so. I should be more specific, horns do work if you run wire directly from the battery. The problem is the wire from the button to the bottom of the steering column. I have always intended to install a button to operate the horn in the dash panel to the left of the steering wheel but obviously not gotten to it. \r\n\r\nThat was the whole list until the 350 mile trip to Monterey the Saturday of the BaT function at \r\nLaguna Seca. On the way home with windows down I began to smell exhaust fumes. Not good. The following morning I located the problem. The gasket between the forward header and the exhaust pipe is leaking. I have called Michael at MJV Automotive and he has agreed to make time to fix it in the next couple days. It's on me!!!\r\n\r\nSo that's it and my conscience is clear, at least about the coupe. It's still the Historic's and Pebble to me. \r\nThis was the longest drive I had taken with the coupe and was to be solo. I left Inverness mid morning and since I wanted to take Hwy 1 and the coast, crossed the Golden Gate through San Francisco. San Francisco is the only city I know of to refuse to be bisected by a Freeway.The Freeway north stops and drops you onto city streets until you find your way to the approach to the Golden Gate Bridge. Driving south you are similarly left looking for the route through the city to another freeway. I have never found it and avoid the confusion by not looking for it.\r\nHwy 1 south directionals are easy and soon the coupe and I were sliding through the misty coast weather. Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz and a six pack of small towns between slid by with sports cars becoming more common the closer to Monterey and Carmel we got. The drone of the big six seemed apropos the weather and land/seascape.\r\nI had booked a room at a small motel on the Carmel/Monterey border. ( if you plan to attend this week book months in advance and expect to pay double the normal rates.) The drive down was uneventful which is exactly what I had hoped it would be. The following morning I did exactly what I wanted, cruised into Carmel early got a parking place right off Ocean Ave., not an easy thing to find, and walked to a small cafe I had been to many times before. I had never been to this week of cars by myself. It was liberating to decide what to do & see without considering others. \r\n I caught the Automobilia Monterey a very large display of automobilia with vendors of treasures from around the world. Great even if you have nothing on your list. The rest of the day was an Auction preview at Gooding & Company at Pebble Beach. That evening dinner with friends that had retired to Carmel Highlands years before and ended with backing down their narrow curving driveway bordered by a rock wall, did I mention steep? Their home had actually started out as a tiny vacation cabin perched on the side of a cliff it appeared to me. My last time for that driveway.\r\nThe following day I previewed the RM Sotheby Auction and I think that was the day of a BaT gathering at a restoration shop just a way off Hwy 68. That evening I met my friend Dan and his girlfriend at a restaurant right on Carmel Bay, gorgeous views. As I pulled into the parking area I realized I may be driving out and hiking in, it was as full as possible. As I pulled by the walkway to the restaurant a fellow stepped out and crooked his finger to follow. Literally a 100 ft. away he gave me the stop signal, backed out a model MB I had never seen and could never have afforded and pointed me into the stall with a smile. Great evening with too much to drink and a very slow drive to my lodging.\r\nThe coupe had gotten more attention than I had expected every place we had been and this is around the then current crop of can you top this \"super car\". It was my final day in the area and my plan was to hit the Bonhams auction before it opened officially and look for a fellow I had met at Lime Rock a couple years before at the Arnolt Bristol gathering. His car had been listed for sale at Bonhams. Also my friends the Lee's were racing the TII titanium can-am car that Bob had just finished restoring with his son Ilya, Ilya was also driving. The track was on schedule after that and then the 101 north.\r\nI pulled into the auction area and proceeded to the big white auction tent and was about to drive past into the grass field beyond to park. A young fellow with an official looking outfit held up his hand for me to stop, he pointed down the side of the long tent and pointed to a couple late model front engined V12 Ferrari's. I honestly can't tell one from another. They were about 75 feet away and being the smart ass I occasionally am said \"do I have to park with those damn Ferrari's?\" The kid was open mouthed when the fellow obviously in charge walked over with a smile on his face and pointed to the corner of the tent and indicated I should park diagonally. I smiled gratefully, parked and realized you couldn't get into the tent without walking around the coupe. It was on display, left the windows down and wandered in bit taller than normal.\r\nStopped by the track, saw the Lee's and hit the road headed north but I will never forget the knowing smile and being pointed to the corner of the tent. However there is foam that could be removed, perhaps 1\" to 1&1/4\". A good upholster could cut and reinstall the leather upholstery.\r\n I have a son who is considerably larger than me at 6'3\" and 245# or so. We discussed how he could possibly fit. I think it could be done, if you were so inclined, to cut the area behind the drivers seat and pick up another three or four inches since I run a single 12V battery to save 35# and the complication of two things that could be done with one. I would do a lot of measuring before I did anything. I learned long ago, the hard way, \"measure twice and cut once\". \r\n I'm sure this sounds sacrilegious to some but done well with all surfaces covered in matching leather most wouldn't notice and if they did, it's your car. Not difficult but a job for cabinet maker not a mechanic.
