I always yearned for the stick in my days of driving the SII. Jaguar made some odd decisions regarding the transmissions in the early seventies cars. It offered the stick for the E-type V12, without the O/D option, yet it offered the 6 cylinder version of this car with stick and O/D which made the XJ6 a bit more desirable perhaps. Nowhere is this lack more pronounced than with the XJ12C, a truly fabulous piece of styling that if converted to 5 speed is a brilliant car, hence my initial comment. I guess the conversion is done less on the 4 door as their value is less and its a costly affair. \r\n\r\nIts not as if installation was problematic, the O/D box is a direct swap in the E-type with the non O/D, and all the work was done with bell housings etc to put the manual in the saloon body. Nice to have the headliner done (requires pulling the rear window to do properly), and rear brakes, and the necessary conversion to a more modern electronic ignition module.\r\nThe V12's are so under-stressed, one shouldn't need to worry about the internals here for well over double the current mileage, and everything else is not particularly difficult if one has the workshop manual and patience. These motors can be built to run, even in carbureted form, but little point in undertaking such an effort here.\r\nBesides fuel injection, the later Series 2's switched to the GM TH400 automatic, which at least provides a lot of modification options.\r\nA photo if the boot floor without the spare and with the fuel pump cover removed might be valuable to help assess rust, though it looks decent from underneath.\r\nAs pretty a sedan as there ever was! It is a true sports sedan. The independent rear suspension with locking axel and inboard disk brakes make it handle very well on the corners. A quarter turn of the steering wheel and you go around. I agree the car would perform really great with a four speed in place of the auto transmission. The engine is a high compression, short stroke engine. When I place the car in 1st and floor the accelerator the car moves ahead pretty good, but when it reaches 3000 rpm it takes off like a rocket till I need to upshift at 60. When the car was first marketed it was noted to be the fastest production line sedan with a top speed of 150mph. I have no idea if it really will do that since I rarely exceed the local speed limits. Finally some have noted that it burns lots of gas. I agree. I get about 10mpg around town and have never driven it far enough on the open road to get an idea what that number might be. But think about it, back when this car was produced Detroits big sedans only got 10-12 mpg around town. There were only about 1700 of these short wheel base left hand drive V12\u2019s built in Series 1. Most of these are gone to the rust pile or have had a V8 placed under the hood. Steering rack & transmission: critical to replace the rack bushings and be ready to replace the rack due to leaks. Transmission bushings go bad and easy to replace. Has inboard rear brake rotors, kind of big diy job. Brake calipers are Girling and had safety wire in the fixing bolts - just like airplanes.\nI was considering a v8 / GM trans swap before I traded it for a 68 mustang.
