The 2L GTI 16V got a 2pc BBS wheel, which designation escapes me at the moment. When the 2L 16V cars came, then VW started using the teardrop on all 8V GTI/GLI.\r\n\r\nLastly, I know all Jetta 16V (1.8L) were German, while the non-16V everything were Mexican, so I wonder if this Mexican GTI is a Mexican 8V GTI with drivetrain swap????\r\n\r\nAlso, this 8V interior is not correct for the US market 16V cars. ALL 16V cars got the delightfully sublime Recaro Trophy (manual in GTI and power in Jetta until 1989). The front and rear seats pictured are also not in the 16V fabric palette. Volkswagen used this \"Recaro styled\" sport seat since early 80's, but these seats pictured are absolutely not a Recaro. Also, all Recaro Trophy GLI/GTI came on traditional, removable Recaro bases - another way to tell whether a seat is truly a recaro or not.\r\n\r\nRegardless, it appears to be a nice, complete car, however, the interior is completely wrong (the fabrics don't even match the carpet). But it was EXTREMELY common back in the day for any 16V car to be stolen and have the seats stripped so maybe that's why this car wears 8V interior (when I worked at the dealer, there were even thefts at the dock in Portland). All MK2 NA GTI's were Mexican. The emissions sticker shows this as a 16v - which is beyond what you would expect to see if this were a swap. \r\n\r\nThe 1.8L 16V NA GTI never got a Recaro interior. And the interior they did get wasn't the most durable. It was very common to swap this interior into older 16V's, and it's a nice upgrade - unless one preferred the black flavor of the original. I believe VW referred to these as 'Sport' seats. Definitely not officially Recaro - although they may have been made by Recaro. \r\n\r\nAs far as I can see the interior was pulled complete from a '91/2 8v GTi and is matching. We got off the train and onto a bus that took us to Gablitz, where our hotel-for-wayward immigrants was (At this time, anyone Jewish leaving the USSR on a permanent exit visa was required to go through Austria and Italy, where their final destination was determined at various consulates and organizations in Rome).\r\n\r\nThere are some things I remember from Gablitz. The creek behind the hotel (it smelled terrible, very sewage-ey). The supermarket called Mondo a couple of blocks away (where I saw a drunk guy fall off an escalator and crack his head open a couple of feet away from me, resulting in blood spraying on my hand-me down shoes). The fact that the hotel owner was named Michael and had a blue W124 Mercedes.\r\n\r\nBut, the most important thing I remember was that Gablitz was where I first laid eyes on the Mk2 Golf.\r\n\r\nWe had just stepped off the bus from the train station and were across the road from the hotel when I spotted it. For example in Europe these wheels could indeed be had with 16v GTi\u2019s. These items include teardrop wheels, the fuba \u201c16v\u201d antenna, and these seats for a brief moment in time. \nVW also had the habit of introducing half year models, such as the big bumper round quad headlight grills and 2.0L 16v Gti\u2019s in mid 1990. \nEarly 1990 8v Gti\u2019s had teardrops and small bumpers and rectangular headlights along with this interior. Later 1990 8v had the big bumper round lights and this interior. In 1991 the interior changed. \nThis car is correct with teardrops as stated and the grill and wheels are the only change. Weather permitting, any nice old car should be driven at least once every 2-3 weeks for at least 20 miles non-stop, preferably at least every week in nice weather (since in winter it will see less, if any, road time)\r\n\r\nAlso, can you elaborate on rear engine seal leak please? From what I know the 1.8 revs better and the 2.0 has more torque and you almost never go over 5K rpm. If you like higher revving engines the 1.8 is the way to go but the 2.0 will smoke it in a race. I heard the tactic to wake up the 2.0 was to replace the head with the 1.8 head and Euro intake manifold. I got a 1.8 head to put on mine but a deer took it out before I got a chance to install it.
