In the mid 80\u2019s during high school I owned MGs, mostly MGBs and Midgets. As my brother and friends will tell you, I was always changing the clutch, head gasket or whatever. Then life happened. I got married, got a real job, had kids and a two seater convertible was not really practical. As the kids got older, the convertible lifestyle kept pulling at me. First a Mercury Capri (tell me about it), then a Saab convertible and finally a 2013 Shelby GT 500 convertible, 662 hp of 6 speed manual driving excitement. The Shelby is my daily driver all summer and has 55,000 miles on it and is a car I will never sell.\r\n\r\nFast forward and Covid hits. My wife says that now that I am not commuting everyday into Chicago that I need a new hobby as I am driving her crazy sitting at home. I spent over a year and a half looking for this Aston Martin. I have always loved DB9s. I think it is one of the most elegant and sexy (my wife doesn\u2019t understand how a car can be sexy) vehicles built. I wanted something understated with an automatic transmission (my other two being stick) that would be my weekend driver. I wanted the V12 and the aesthetics of a hand crafted piece of art to do the talking.\r\n\r\nI love this car and love driving it. My wife says that I smile every time I come back from driving. I take unnecessary trips in the middle of the day on a Saturday or Sunday just to experience the understated finesse and power of the vehicle. Here is the problem - 6 cars and a 4 car garage. The styling and quality is the first experience, the interior aroma alone is worth the price. Switch gear can feel a little less than robust, and it\u2019s a little fussy. Then you excuse yourself to the onlookers who have gravitated to the car fire up the engine. Fantastic sounds erupt, and you find your gear and off you go. Wind noise is very well controlled, the suspension bushings a little stiff the first few miles until it\u2019s warmed up. The suspension handles the little bumps well, and handles them better once you\u2019re over 45mph. If you push it harder, past speed limits and public safety concerns, it does what is called \u201cshrinking around you\u201d. Its mass is concentrated to the DB9\u2019s center, and from where you sit, a hard turn is perceived as the car rotating around you. It\u2019s well planted, predictable and manageable at the extremes.. The seat is remarkably comfortable and adjustability is such that you find several positions in which you\u2019re comfortable, and this prevents fatigue on long distance runs. Adequate trunk space, not a whole lotta storage in the cabin. Never been unhappy even on 2 week roadtrips to Canada, NH, Maine and back. Pushing it hard is confidencebuilding and enjoyable, and it surprises or frustrates my Ferrari, AMG, Vette and Porsche friends that it has no problem keeping up when you demand it. It is an incredible driver\u2019s car which gets more spontaneous attention (often from women) than a lot of our other vintage exotics. We\u2019ve owned ours since 2015, maintenance isn\u2019t a burden, but we take care of everything. I have no plans to sell it, ever.
