They also smoke more on start-up. Assuming a healthy engine, the smoke should largely disappear. 2) the GS was Vespa's top of the line scooter in the day. It was the ultimate Mod scoot, as expressed by The Who's incomparable \u201cQuadrophenia\u201d, in which Pete Townsend sings \u201c...... I got a GS scooter......\u201d. These will go 50 mph all day, but not designed for highways. My personal preference is for the rounded GS tails because they remind me of Sophia Loren's bum\u2014but that\u2019s just me. I was all in with my light metallic blue 150 Sprint with Tiger skin seat. I lived in Madrid, but for long weekend adventures, I could drain the fuel, push it up a ramp to the freight car, and then grab an overnight bunk bed (the heat and smoke probably took years off of my life) to the Costa del Sol. Roll in early morning, push the scooter down the ramp, and open a water bottle full of enough fuel to get me out of the rail station and to a gas station for a fill-up. Old Vespas were everywhere in Spain in the mid 80s. I would then cruise and explore the coast, and/or make my way cross-country back to Madrid for class with my USC colleagues, and teaching private English lessons to support my scootering. This was Vespa\u2019s top of the line Hot Rod when it came out, following a long and storied line of \u201cperformance\u201d versions: the GS 150 (the Mod\u2019s choice and subject of much debate with Lambretta fans), the GS 160 and then this 180 SS. For the un-initiated, these 2-Stroke Vespas are shifted entirely with the left hand: What appears to be a brake lever is actually the clutch, and the entire hand grip and clutch lever rotates to select your gear. Sounds complicated, but easily learned and managed (obviously, given the millions of riders who have mastered it). Modern (past 20+ years) scooters are \u201ctwist and go\u201d meaning variable \u201cgearing\u201d is handled by a form of CVT using conical rubber rollers to provide variable power v speed. Just twist the throttle and go. Modern Vespas are quiet, stable, have excellent brakes and will break 80 mph \u2013 but are most enjoyable running errands around towns where parking a car is a challenge and cruising scenic roads at 40-50 mph \u2013 hopefully in a pack with other scooterists\u2026.
