On the 4 speed transmission housing, there is a stamp pad on the passenger side of the case near the front that would have a VIN # stamped on it. There were no VIN numbers stamped on DANA rear end housings or assembles. Over the years there have been cases documented that these \"pads\" had been shaved off and re-stamped. In regards to the stamp pad on the engine block, often times they are painted over (as this has been) when the engine is assembled. The only way to confirm that VIN on that pad is to get under the car and very carefully (with a razor blade) gently scrap off the paint. The pad will have a VIN number stamped similar as the one on the trans casing. It will either be the correct one for the car or if the engine has been swapped sometime in its life it will have a different VIN stamped. It could even been left blank. That happened on the occasion when perhaps the engine or block was replaced under warranty and the block was sent to the dealer to replace. In those days it would have been expected to have the dealer perform that task of re-stamping the VIN on the pad. But that didn't always happen. Keep in mind that all of the \"numbers matching\" crap was started in 1968 by the Federal Government. It had nothing to do with correctness of the car or its performance or options. I had to do with manufactures at the time keeping rack of what and when they were selling and reporting to the Government.
