Some cars are labelled by their build date, others by the date of registration or first sale (usually determined by where they\u2019re sold). My estimate is that this was produced somewhere around September 63. Both the wiper date and chassis number very slightly predate my car that was built on 3 Oct 63. Production changes around this time would be pretty irrelevant after all this time (\u201cimproved brake shoes\u201d introduced in Aug 63 for example). \n\nUnfortunately we don\u2019t get a lot of insight into the engine\u2026 One would expect to find a \u201cflat front\u201d (aka Formula Junior) block and a triangular plate attached to the back of the block reverse stamped \u201c1070\u201d. Should be easy to photograph\u2026\n\nThis car seems to have a lot of original features ie black gear stick with domed boot), underbonnet insulation, head bolt instead of stud. As pointed out the body has a later notched front valance panel. I don't see any signs of the front panel being replaced though. Which is an issue. Fenders have original spot welds showing and body number plate on slam panel has what appears to be original spot welds. Voltage regulator in location of an 850 mini would be an issue, but it appears that the wiring harness shows it might be long enough that it was simply relocated for some reason. If the car has the plastic mountings for the regulator in the wing, you might have a reshell here. Obviously car is missing brake servo. Another issue is the boot board brackets the one with the rubber clip is missing and homemade boot board is obvious. I'd like to see whats under the board as well as the brackets to see if they are riveted in as they should be. As far as engine goes, I see rivets where ID plate is located but there is so much crud it's hard to tell if engine plate is still there. So on to breather. Early cooper S engines had a vent pipe down back of engine which you would not be able to see. Later S had the PCV vent valve and breather in plain sight. To the guy who insists a 970 wasn't an S engine and never came in a production car. Please do your homework. All Cooper S cars were purpose built to allow the factory to compete in different classes of rallye or race. 970/1071/1275. That means in order to meet the FIA homologation rules they had to be in production cars/ sold to the public . I know having owned an MG Metro 6R4 Group B car and having the original FIA paperwork with my 1964 1275 S which SCCA required when the car was brought back to the US and raced in the 60's after being used as a rallye car in Germany. Plus my friend just sold his original 970 S project on ebay. I would like to see the body tag on the front floor if it matches the one on the slam panel. Only real reason a heritage cert is preferred would be it has the original body #, so you can verify they jive with the one on the car. Would also verify no breather on engine. Should have small sa in middle of engine number. It's a shame the carbs and air cleaner are missing, becoming harder to source and like @1071S mentioned everyone was so focused on the vacuum cleaner parts they blew right by the missing carbs! Ha... It should be AEG151 for a 1071. You can clearly see the lug below the head in photo 66. Little to no space above it should be a 1071, the 1275 had approx 3/8\" above lug. As far as the tappet covers go you don't need to see them to know it's a tappet chest block. Those block have larger core plugs and while it's filthy, to the trained eye is clearly visable behind the dipstick photo 65. The valance panel is not correct for an early car as @klaar1 said should have full skirt. The body tag is spot welded in place, see photos 80/81. Look at left weld they are recessed dents with paint in them which appear as blobs in photo 79. Optical illusion i.e. very bad photos. Been doing this for a living going on 47 years and own 4 1071 S myself as well as a dozen 1275 S. @boxweed, it's a great car. Glad it's found a good home. Some people on this thread think the car has those notches, which would be incorrect for the date of this car. However, I'm with @boxweed - I don't think they are actually notched, I think they are just bent. Hopefully the seller will provide the photos I just requested to clarify. \r\n\r\nBased on the FE number the seller just provided, I would estimate the shell to be produced somewhere around August/September of 1963 which is spot on for when we think this car was likely built (not uncommon especially for North American cars to have a decent delay until they were first registered so it isn't that strange that it is registered as a 1964).\r\n\r\nThe body tag (which is on the slam panel) looks original to me (I see spot welds, not rivets). If we had a heritage certificate it would tell us if that body tag number matches the VIN. Unfortunately we don't have that so all it tell us is that it looks original to the front panel, but it doesn't tell us if the front panel is original to this car. However, I will agree with @drmini that you can't really see anywhere obvious that the front panel would have been replaced. So if the front valence is just damaged as opposed to notched, then that all makes sense. If the front valence is notched, then it's a bit of a problem to figure out what exactly was replaced.\r\n\r\nThe paint looks original to me (aside from the obvious touch up areas in the front). These cars were painted with a red oxide primer and you can see the primer in multiple areas on the nose of the car. You can also see the strengthening bar behind the grill as well as the lip around the edge of where the grill should be is all painted black. That is correct, but almost never done right when a car is repainted. \r\n\r\nThe car is clearly a North American import. It has the very difficult to find rear license plate extension which allows the car to fit an American license plate. The driver side rear upper part of the taillight (for the blinker) is red which is correct for a North American car. Note that the passenger side is orange, which is wrong. The original likely cracked at some point and the red originals are very hard to find so it was just replaced with the more ubiquitous orange. \r\n\r\nIn late summer of 1964 chrome gear change levers were introduced. This car has a black gear change lever with a domed rubber gaiter which would be correct for this date car.\r\n\r\nI don't know what that thing is in the trunk that appears to be connected to a 2x4. I guess it's some kind of fuel pump. Normally the fuel pump is an SU fuel pump underneath the rear of the car.\r\n\r\nThe boot board brackets are another important area for identifying these cars. They should have the correct brackets for a board. I agree with a previous post that these seem to be properly there and riveted in, but it would be nice to confirm with photos with the boot board removed. The boot board itself is not correct - somebody made one for some reason. Maybe the car had some kind of auxiliary tank in the rear for racing???\r\n\r\nIn the recent photos with the rocker cover off there is an unfortunate shadow, but I believe it shows the head is the AEG163 which would have been correct for an original 1071 engine in this time period. They frequently cracked so many/most got replaced with the 12G940 head. The exhaust header as previously pointed out is also clearly the pressed type which is what would have been on the car originally and usually is replaced by now. Both that and the original head indicate that it is at least possible that the engine/exhaust are lower mileage. \r\n\r\nThe car does not have an oil cooler. They were optional until January 1966. It would be nice to know from the heritage certificate if this car originally had that option. \r\n\r\nThe wheels are the larger 4.5x10 wheels that were an option on Cooper S' - they should be painted Old English White (some argue a creamier color) and they are missing the hubcaps.\r\n\r\nThe car has just 1 fuel tank. Many people incorrectly believe that all Cooper S' had 2 tanks, but that was not the case. A 2nd tank was an option until it became standard much later than this car.\r\n\r\nThe car does not have the correct dual carburetor setup. I have no idea what type of carb it has, but it is not from a mini. Obviously air intake is the same story. \r\n\r\nThe car has the correct sun visors (at least one) that were changed in October of 1964\r\n\r\nUpholstery looks original. Obviously missing the carpets, I would assume for weight when the car was racing. I assume it was raced based on the roll cage. \r\n\r\nI think the big question is the engine. Obviously it has been painted, which means it was probably out of the car, which is not odd at all for a car of this age. But we don't even know if it is a 1071 engine or not, which is kind of a big deal if you are buying a 1071 cooper s. Hoping the seller provides some of the photos requested to help identify what it actually is. Still not clear to me from the photos whether the engine tag is missing or just really dirty. Seeing casting numbers and the breather on the back of the engine would help tremendously. \r\n\r\nOverall, with the engine as the big unknown still, the car looks like a pretty original and correct 1963 1071 Cooper S (assuming the front valence checks out). This engine would not have a cannister breather only a vent pipe which like an old road draft tube goes from the tappet cover down to the bottom of the block. I've only seen a couple of later mid 19641071/1275S cars even have one installed from the factory and if you look at previous listings here w/ heritage certs I don't recall any of them having one. Thinking about it, the vehicle is originally from Idaho, so it could originally be Canadian. Speedo part number is SN4479/30. To the right is 880. \r\nObviously I've only been the steward of the car of the past 15 years but have started to dink around with it. Been storing it although hoping to get to at least a roller shortly. I've bought tires for it and am in the process of refinishing the original wheels. Might not sound like much progress but I have too many projects and not enough time. Hoping to get it possibly running later this year.\r\nAlso has some interesting options. Has the factory lamp guards, Koni shocks, an Abarth exhaust.
