We walked to the nearest pay phone to get a tow truck. I had to be home by midnight, and we were hours from Grants Pass. Boyfriend paid for tow with our dinner money, had a swig from some whiskey someone offered him on the beach, and realized he was in no shape to drive all the way back to Grants Pass. I still needed to be home by midnight or police would be called. That was the night I learned to granny shift. It was a former telephone company van, still had the weled on rack for a ladder on the top driver side. Someone had repainted it blue and white - I added wood paneling, indoor-outdoor carpet, home made headliner and curtains, an 8 track tape player with powered speakers, and Ansen style chrome steel wheels. And yes, my high school sweetheart rode on a small pad on the engine cover. One note of caution, these were well known to have a problem with broken frames. Mine broke right in behind the driver side front wheel. If I were bidding on this one, I would want to see pics of the frame taken from the side with both front wheels removed. Now, if I can find my old box of Black Sabbath tapes, I may just have to bid on this one. It looks really good - I thought then (and still do) that these are about the best looking design of any van - ever.
