Read that again. The tires were inflated as per the owner's manual. Ten PSI lower in the front than the back. The car was not tested with the tires inflated equally.\r\n\r\nThe safety of the Corvair was dependent on the correct tire inflation, a practice that was nearly universally ignored by owners and gas station attendants. Yes, the tires should've been inflated as per the manual. Here we have years and years of cars coming out of Detroit where the usual was to have the front and rear tires inflated equally. Common usage in the US was for tires to be inflated equally from front to back. The fact that Corvairs would on the road with equally inflated tires was going to be a certainty and GM should've made that a design criterion. They did not. That was Nader's entire point: They designed and produced a vehicle that was safe so long as the tires were maintained CONTRARY TO USUAL PRACTICE. \r\n\r\nYeah, yeah, yeah, every Corvair hobbyist knows about the tire thing. And every car enthusiast reads the owner's manual. But how much of the driving public was aware that they were driving a car the safe operation of which DEPENDED on the odd tire inflation? \r\n\r\nAnd for anyone else that sees Nader as the culprit in the demise of the Corvair, I'll tell you this: Ralph had nothing to do with the car getting yanked from production. Zero. Nada. The Mustang killed the Corvair and it was buried by the Chevy II. Look at the sales numbers and pay attention to when the Nader book was published. GM killed the Corvair because it failed against the competition. If you look at the sales numbers, they were good at the outset, peaked in 1961 and declined steadily throughout the first model run which ended in 1964. It wasn\u2019t the bad publicity that hurt sales, and it certainly wasn\u2019t Ralph Nader\u2019s book, which came out in 1965. Nor were the pre \u201964 sales numbers bad because of the Mustang which hit the market as a \u201964-1/2, in April of 1964. The numbers for \u201960-\u201964 tell the tale. 250K, then 329K, 328K, 284K, and 207K for \u201964. And throughout this period, both Falcon and Valiant numbers were climbing steadily. Both Corvair and Falcon numbers dropped in \u201964, (and the Valiant fell in \u201965); this was clearly because of the Mustang. What\u2019s notable, is the drop in Corvair numbers from \u201962 to \u201963. Again, no bad press, no Nader\u2019s book, no Mustang. So why did the Corvair do so poorly against its main competition?\r\nRemember, all three were marketed as \u2018economy cars\u2019, as Detroit\u2019s answer to VW and the expected rush of Japanese cars.\r\nAs an economy car, the Corvair was barely decent (compared to a VW) but not terribly worse than the Falcon or Valiant. I think the answer is the offering of the Chevy II (in \u201962), a design that was certainly not anywhere near the Corvair in radical design and, for all intents and purposes, a GM version of the Falcon and Valiant. And it was offered as a four cylinder, for the truly economy-minded buyer. I think the Chevy II put a big dent in the Corvair buyer\u2019s pool. It was GM\u2019s realization that it needed their own Falcon/Valiant that is important here \u2013 their realization that the American market was not ready for a rear-engine, air cooled car. At least not as an economy car. Look back at the advertising of the period and you\u2019ll notice that when the Chevy II came out the Corvair was no longer marketed as an economy car but as a \u2018sporty\u2019 car. But by then, the handwriting was on the wall, and it was put there by the Mustang, against which the Corvair had trouble competing.
