I never heard of worn valve guides being the cause of a rich condition. Blue smoke is not a rich condition. That's valve guides.\r\nNow black smoke, that's a rich condition. Dirty, sooty, black sparkplugs sounds like rich mixture. SU's are easy to tune once you get the hang of it. SU's are pretty simple to rebuild and fix if you just take your time. Couple of wrenches, a screwdriver and a Uni-syn and Bobs your uncle your a carb mechanic.\r\nValve guides won't change compression or leak down tests. They are on the other side of compression. They rattle and will cause the burning of oil. Actually not that big of a deal in the scheme of things. Pull the head, have it machined a bit, new valves and guides a head gasket and new anti freeze.\r\n\r\n\r\nI'd be putting an oil filter kit on it at the same time.
