I owned a '71 in the same color, that I bought when I lived in southern California, so it was fun to view the pictures. Amazingly, the dash has not cracked, and the car still runs great with the Bosch fuel injection system. There seems to be some strange alignment of various body panels (right door and right front hood), but it's hard to say whether that indicates it was hit and repaired at some point. As for the engine leaking oil, that was always the #1 complaint people had when I worked for several years as a VW mechanic during college, so I wouldn't worry about that at all. I'll be interested to see what this well cared-for piece of VW's history sells for. Sadly, I now live in AZ where it would need A/C and that would ruin any stock-engine air-cooled VW, so I can't even consider buying it despite fond memories. It was like that when I bought it. \n\nTo my knowledge the fuel gauge itself works (based on the fact that the turn signal indicator light works). The needle recently just dropped past E even when full. I\u2019m assuming that means it\u2019s the physical float switch in the tank. \n\nThe hi beams feels like it\u2019s the physical selector switch, it just no longer pulls in to engage the hi beams. Not sure what the issue is. \n\nThe horn - there\u2019s a plate that engages the horn from the steering wheel. Sometimes if you pull the steering wheel with extra force (no power steering) the plate pinches and activates the horn inadvertently. So I just disconnected it for the time being. \n\nThe turn signal just recently quit. Left turn works 100%, right turn is intermittent. If you go over a speed bump it quits working, go over another speed bump it comes back. Maybe bad ground? I\u2019m not sure. \n\nThat\u2019s all I know of, so just being honest.\n\nThere are a few projects for the new owner to take care of, no doubt. It\u2019s far from perfect. He was possibly the first person to have dual carbs CARB exempt by the California BAR After replacing his FI system with dual Webers he was denied a smog cert on visual inspection (spoiler alert the carbs ran better and had lower emissions than the FI), so he was sent to the BAR. He ended up finding a loophole that stated if an original emissions item was unavailable or the cost was too high an adequate replacement that met tailpipe emissions was able to be BAR stickered. He successfully argued that the cost of a complete fuel injection system for a 1969 VW Type 3 would cost more than the car's value, so he got the sticker.
