That is what GM used on these cars when built. Today, lacquer is not used. A base coat with a urethane clear coat is most often used and is more long lasting than the old lacquer paint. The new paint coatings are a high solids content whereas the old lacquer was not, and often became brittle in the elements resulting in \u201cchecking\u201d or \u201ccrows footing\u201d after years of being in the elements. I can\u2019t remember the last time lacquer was even available in the body shop industry as the amount of emissions it produces. The EPA cracked down on lacquer many years ago. Lacquer done right produced excellent show car results, but due to its low solids was never great at longevity. To reproduce the absolute mirror finish a high quality show car lacquer paint job was back in the day can be mimicked in today\u2019s modern paint products, but it takes a great amount of labor. And he gave me the name of the shop.\n\nCalled the shop and the owner who painted it was still there and remembered the car. He asked me if it could brought out to him to see it again. Agreed to do it, because was having some doubts about it's lacquer composition. When he saw the car again, you could the look of pride on his face on how well it held up. The polishing was done with a heavy Sioux electric buffer and a compound that had the consistency of peanut butter with grit in it.
