The automatics were not up to the torque and vibration and failures were common (I had 5 transmission failures in an '82 diesel Suburban). Lots of folks were uncomfortable with an automatic, so Ford came out with the ZF 6 speed (really a five speed with granny low, for maneuvering to hook up that trailer). I wouldn't have it any other way! A far bigger concern than driving a manual is backing a trailer with a bumper mounted hitch. The wheelbase is so long it takes huge steering corrections to make much difference at the trailer compared to a shorter wheelbase vehicle. You get used to it.
