I have been a small Classic Car Dealer and collector (dangerous combination) in San Diego since the late 1980's and I am very big on original cars. My first car ever was a 1966 Bug and once my business was established I thought it would be nice to experience one as a keeper. I found this car from the original owner when it had about 67K miles in 1998. She was a retired teacher and was giving up driving and moving in with her daughter. It was the highest advertised price Bug in the Auto Trader magazine at the time, but even from the small photo in the magazine you could tell it was super clean. I went to see it, and as soon as her daughter backed it out into the daylight I knew I was buying it. It was never abused or altered, rust free and It was still in original paint with just some spray touch up to the front fenders and hood from rock chips. It ran and drove exceptionally well. I only had to make minimal improvements such as replacing its bias ply tires with radials and re-painting the rims. I enjoyed it for several years until another \"keeper\" opportunity had come up in the way of a one owner 1962 Cadillac Coupe Deville. At the time we had recently bought a house and I had other cars stashed away as well so I reluctantly decided to sell the Bug. \nA local San Diego gentleman, Leonard bought it from me when it had 72K miles in the fall of 2000. When he picked it up I had him put my business card in the glove box and told him to call me if he would ever sell it. Of course never thought it would happen but sure enough I got a call from him about 8 years later as his circumstances had changed. Over the phone I asked him what he had done to the car and he lost me when he told me he had it painted. From my experience in the local market at the time nobody ever spent enough to get a Bug repainted, and dam it it was nice original paint when I had sold it to him! However, I agreed to come see it if not to satisfy my curiosity but also as a courtesy to him for calling me as I had asked so many years before. \nThen just like the first time I saw the car, I knew I was buying it again! It turns out the paint shop he brought it to had convinced him to do it the right way by removing windows, trim, fenders etc. It was / and still is an amazing job that gives the appearance of being done at the Factory. On the basis of this paint work I have been using the same Shop ever since without disappointment (GA Coachworks). Leonard turned out to be the perfect, careful caretaker of this car and noted all the extraordinary maintenance he did, and the cost on a spread sheet.\nI would go on to own the car again another 9 years and making many memories with it. I had a large warehouse at the time Downtown and anyone who visited during this period would remember seeing the car parked toward the back next to my 1969 Saab Station Wagon. They were never for sale if customers would ask. I would drive it sparingly, periodically taking it home with me for a weekend. By this time, it was all about looking at it and being reminded of all my own, and my family's extensive experience with Volkswagen Bugs back in the day. Just to open the door and smelling that unique bug scent......\n Things were again changing and this time I was running out of space and after much thought put it up for sale once again. Fortunately, the new buyer was another perfect caretaker with lots of Volkswagen experience as one can tell by this detailed description and the photos presented. \nBy this time you maybe wondering if I will be bidding as well, but afraid not this time. I thought other bidders might find this insightful. This is my response:\r\n\r\nHello ,\r\n\r\nThanks for your note.\r\n\r\nI bought this car four years ago from oldtown. He\u2019s a very nice guy and if you\u2019ve ever looked at his website he buys and sells a lot of high end cars like Mercedes, Jaguar, etc. He\u2019s very knowledgeable about cars, especially European models.\r\n\r\nMy very first car was also a 1966 Beetle in the same color although nowhere near the condition of this one. I sold it to my (now ex-) brother-in-law when I went into the Air Force with the understanding that he would hold onto it and I\u2019d buy it back when I got my first permanent duty assignment. I guess his understanding was not the same as mine and he ended up selling it before I got stationed in California. The fact that he sold the car is not the reason for him being my ex-brother-in-law, just to be clear.\r\n\r\nAnyway, life happened and for many years I passively looked to find another Beetle because I had so many memorable experiences with the first one. I\u2019m also a sucker for mid-century German cars for their combination of styling, engineering and overall reliability. I have a 1973 Porsche 914 2.0 that is also in fantastic condition.\r\n\r\nWhen I saw this car on the web, I flew down to San Diego and, like Bill, I pretty much knew that I was going to buy it without even driving it. The car was painted in 2007 but it looks like it was painted yesterday. They did an incredible job. The interior paint is all original.\r\n\r\nMy wife told me she thought I was reliving my youth. I guess I couldn\u2019t really disagree. I decided that I would make it the best driver I reasonably could. I never intended to trailer it from Concours event to Concours event and this is not that kind of car. I wanted to be able to take it out any time (mostly weekends) and have fun with it. And have fun with it we have.\r\n\r\nI had the engine rebuilt and the transmission replaced along the way. I also had the interior re-done and I got the wheels painted and the bumpers re-chromed. I\u2019m not a mechanic and I don\u2019t have the tools or equipment necessary to work on cars, but I do enjoy tinkering with it. I did replace the door-to-body seals myself.\r\n\r\nWe are the same age as you and my wife and I find now ourselves with four cars and two drivers. I have put her in the unenviable position of having to leave her car in the driveway, and like Bill, as much as I hate to let it go, I think it\u2019s time for someone else to have the chance to enjoy this car as much as I have. Someone once told me that we never really own these things and that we really only act as caretakers and pass them along to the next person who can appreciate them for what they are. I believe there is wisdom in those words.\r\n\r\nAfter putting the car on BaT, I learned that there are a couple of repairs that need to be made.
