First, I fell in love with the Figaro years before I finally rented one in 2015 in the UK. When I knew I'd be in London, I contacted a guy who had just rented his out to a film company , where it later appeared in the Absolutely Fabulous comedy (came out in 2016). It was a rattletrap, but it was a blast to drive. A couple years later I asked a car expert in Sussex named Graham Horgan (he owns Plans Performance Motorcars in Surrey, south of London) to get me one at auction in Japan. He originally was confident he could get something decent and fix it up for 12K GBP. He bought one at auction in Tokyo and took it completely apart - it was a Topaz Mist, my favorite at the time - and he was custom refurbishing it. \n\n12K GBP (British Pounds) later, it was still wanting another 12K GBP of work, (and this was when GBP were pricy indeed) - and that was before shipping to California. I ended up just giving it to him for his trouble in 2020, a year after I located Alfie in LA.\n\nThat\u2019s his name - Alfie. Tremelune, I bought the car in 2019 from a dealer in Santa Ana, CA - I'll continue the story of Alfie now:\r\n\r\nTop Rank Imports in Santa Ana, CA put it up for sale in 2019 after a private client asked them to find a \u201cperfect\u201d and original Figaro at auction in Japan, After they shipped it to LA, the buyer couldn\u2019t perform on the contract, and they had already done some work on it, new tires, etc., so they took some great photos of it on the flight line at a nearby airport and put it up for sale. I couldn\u2019t believe my eyes. Instantly, I forgot about the Topaz Mist Figaro I had Graham rebuilding in the UK and all I wanted was Alfie. \r\n\r\nTop Rank was asking $25K for it, but I already knew that I had a lot more expense coming to get it certified in California. I had a mechanic in Santa Ana, Jack Trebedjian - who was recommended by Figaro enthusiast Vicki Minnelli and had researched all of this. I bent her ear like crazy. Jack had begun specializing in rehabbing Figaro\u2019s after they became legal to import to the U.S. in 2016.\r\n\r\nJack had been working with the G&K lab which is the only place CA DOT licenses to inspect, test and remediate emissions to California standards. Even with his help, it took $5K and nearly a year before his own work and the G&K work was done to his satisfaction. After the precious BAR sticker was affixed on the driver's door well, in 2020 I finally flew down to pick up Alfie and drive him from Santa Ana to the central Sierra foothills - initially up the Pacific Coast Highway, past Malibu and up through the mountain range above LA to the Central Valley and home. It was about 300 miles - and I had a blast. It was as easy to drive on the notorious 405 freeway as well as Interstate 5 and then on country roads to my house near Yosemite. I hadn't had any trouble driving him north to my home in Central California, but it cooled my jets for a while, and I wasn't able to get him out of the garage. I put a good trickle charger on him, but by 2021 I started having severe neck pain, went through over a year of pain management and at the end of 2022 had some tricky cervical spine surgery that rebuilt the four central vertebrae of my neck due to arthritis and bone spurs. During my long recuperation during this past very stormy winter, I realized I needed to make preparations to move closer to family in the Seattle area - I\u2019m turning 73 this year, and have always been on my own (I forgot to get married and have kids! :-)\n\nWell, my beautiful 19 year-old house here - with 350-degree views of the Sierras as well as the coastal range to the west - went on the market, and a roof inspection showed it already needs a new roof. Over 18 years I had two sets of solar panels put on it - which have to be removed and replaced, adding to the already large expense.
