I was in the midst of restoring mine. Mine won a concours and was driven daily in all weather. \n\nThe Coolant Temp Switch, is located very close to thermostat housing, closest to the fan. Yes, the color indicates it is a different temperature. Likely 0 Celsius. My mechanic got the wrong one back in 2004, and my car was on cold-start fast idle speed all the time. So it was running richer too. At 32F it refused to start/run. I called BAV AUTO and insisted they look at all the switches and to NOT get me a purple/magenta one. The 533/633/733 is different from the common 535/635/735 ones. A yellow one arrived, I installed and it was back to normal. Prior it was sputtering black smoke and stalling while driving! Now your fast idle,\nWhich is 500 rpm higher than it should be in some photos, could also be due to how your idle control valve is adjusted. A screw can adjust it, but careful how much to turn. The idle control unit in glovebox could also be causing havoc - in my case that was causing surging idle speed. I noticed a number of 533/633/733s on BAT with 300-600 higher than normal idle speeds. Seems few\nTechs know what they are doing. Including the owner who now owns my old 533i. Your bumpers look good - don\u2019t smash them in! This is also evident by lack of rust present on this car. \r\n\r\nDocumentation is a bit tough, the vast majority of the work done to this car was done by myself in house. I can provide receipts for things like gasket kits, but there is no overall bill or work order like you would get from a shop. \r\n\r\nIn terms of what was wrong with the motor, the head gasket was starting to let go. Additionally, the oil pan gasket, front and rear main seals, and the timing cover seals leaked. Things that are typical for a 40 year old, 160k motor. \r\n\r\nAs far as work done, cylinder head came off and was machined, rockers and stem seals were replaced, engine seals were replaced and motor was reassembled. Lower rotating assembly was left alone. \r\n\r\nI can look into some kind of a pre purchase inspection. It\u2019s gotten the green light from Les Schwab, although I wouldn\u2019t necessarily consider them to be a \u201cgood shop.\u201d\r\n\r\nI hope this clears up any questions/concerns you have.
