Clean out the fuel tank, replace all soft fuel lines, rebuild the carb and pump, replace all soft brake lines, rebuild or replace calipers, new shoes, flush and refill fluid.\r\n\r\nIt would be interesting to see pictures of the bottoms of both doors...the drain holes often got plugged up with dirt and debris over the years allowing moisture to gather in the bottoms of the doors resulting in rust.\r\n\r\nAlso, I\u2019m wondering if the black running board covers on this car are original? I have seen several of these number tags riveted on top of the engine serial number over the years, and none were exactly the same. One example that stands out in my mind was an original owner car in California with known documentation of an engine rebuild at a VW dealer while the owners were vacationing in Canada. My suggestion to the seller would be to carefully grind down the rivet heads and remove the tag, exposing the original serial number. This will clear up any questions and the tag could be easily replaced if someone wanted to for the sake of posterity. If the engine is actually a H series case, chances are it is the original engine and will only add to the value in the end. I was a twelve year old car guy when he got it, so I paid attention to all the changes every year. 1969 added an interior release gas flap (cable pull under the right dashboard; \u201868 was the first outside filler, but no lock) and something very valuable to us in the Northeast, a wired rear windshield defroster. It was a little weird that the rear defroster worked better than the front one. \r\nThis example looks, as others have said) pretty original, except for the interior vinyl and the radio. There is also no way that the mileage is accurate. The gas pedal is worn; the brake and clutch covers wore out quickly but were cheaply and easily replaced; you could buy knock-offs for about two bucks a pair at EJ Korvette Department store in NY. I drove three new Beetles for a total of over 400K miles, never replaced one, and never had a gas pedal look that worn. But it doesn\u2019t matter. This is a pretty original car and a lot here to like.\r\nI kind of hope it remains in California where it can be driven, parked on the street, and will remain in good shape. This car really can be driven every day in a California climate. If running properly, it will have no problem keeping up on the Freeway. \r\nWith all due respect to @RodgerRabbit, there is no way a new 1968 Beetle was $1200. All dealers sold VWs at sticker price in those days (price was the same at every dealer). I would need to search for the receipt, but I think the \u201868 sold for about $1700 (I distinctly remember the only option was the Sapphire AM radio which cost $70.).
