The AW71 4-speed auto retrofit is a nice improvement as these 4-banger cars could get a lot of buzz and thrash going on the highway when paired with the old non-OD 3spd. Should help highway MPG as well. Not \"original,\" but on a car that's to be used as a driver, who cares, and at least it's all factory Volvo parts anyway.\n\nThese early era 200 series cars from the late '70s have a lot to recommend them, even compared to the later models. The '80s cars are more modern but many of them were plagued with wiring harness issues and the engine internals were arguably cheapened/weakened when the \"low friction\" updates were made in 1985 to change the B23F into the B230F. These old B21F (and then B23F) engines were tough and almost impossible to kill, and they don't seem to be prone to the annoying piston slap that's common on the 1985-up engines. The old K-Jetronic mechanical injection is a little primitive compared to the electronic LH cars later but the upside of K-jet is there is little to go wrong with it and they tend to just keep on running. Reliable.\n\nI think there would be plenty of more insane cars to take on a long coastal road trip, even if this one's cosmetics suggest some needs. Pack your AAA card, check the cooling system carefully, take a look at the timing belt and replace or carry a spare on board if you just run with it (non-interference so if it breaks just slap a new one on), grab some spare fuses and relays and maybe an extra fuel pump. Maybe a few spare ignition parts. There just isn't much on this era Volvo that'd leave you on the side of the road aside from those things. I notice it more on warmer days but it can do it on colder ones as well. I have found that engaging the brakes makes it worse so I have always suspected a vacuum leak is the culprit. \r\n\r\nAs for the speedometer; if you look at the attached image the previous owner did not have the \u201cSpeedo gear?\u201d installed. It was one of those \u201csimple fixes\u201d he or I never got around to.
