And while I'd purchased a 2012 135i with a 6-speed manual transmission, tinkering and/or tampering with a late model car of significantly more horsepower and torque seemed unnecessary.\n\nOne of my friends who had recently returned to California offered up a Diamantschwarz 318is with about 200K miles Antrazit cloth interior and factory LSD. It had been in a modest altercation with a curbside trash receptacle, but seemed to be easily repairable. After a brief roadtest I brought it home for a modest fee and went about getting things fixed -- new A/C compressor, dryer and a trip to the bodyshop. The cloth interior was patched with the correct fabric found at a repair shop in Burlingame (thanks, Dom) . I gave it fewer mods than my previous car, but I'm still missing the quicker feeling Z4 steering rack -- it makes a difference. \n\nLast month, after car show season, I parked my 2002tii, fired up the 318is and drove down to the SoCal BMW Vintage Event in Van Nuys. I'd skipped out on the event for a couple of years, and it was good to hang out -- even with such a \"new\" BMW. I can say with all certainty, the fuel mileage was in the 30+ mpg range at greater-than-posted limits, the A/C functioned as it should, and I arrived home without ever missing a beat. \n\nAccording to Hagerty, the E30 318is is increasing in value. That said, it still gets snubbed by the 6-cylinder 325 owners as well as the tuners and their S54, M52, M60, M62, LSX or JZ swaps. \n\nThat's fine with me. I'd go with 16s (for a better tire selection) but any bigger will spoil the ride\r\n\r\nThe engines aren't powerful --- the show 's over by 5k . . . but I've heard ditching the dual-mass flywheel livens things up. Rust, chips dings yes, but the rust is NOT major it's around the windshield wiper mount and you can't even call it rust, it's discolored and will become rust a light sanding and use the paint marker in the glove box, fixed. and I had the spot under the battery fixed when the spoiler and rockers got scotch-guarded. Minor chips in hood (to be expected with original paint) Dings 99% fixed via PDR and there are two dings that would need some MINOR body work to make perfect. It was never my intent to show the car so I just had some minor paint correction and ceramic coat applied...
